hey gang,
there is a group of people in western pa putting together an old school drag night. they call it the flashlight drags. pamperedz had mentioned it to me before.
basically it is old school style street racing on an airport runway in the middle of no where.
check it out http://www.alteredgas.com/flashlight_drags.html
i am definately gonna try to make a trip out to one of their shows. sounds like a great time, and for some of us old folks a blast down memory lane :)

Oh hell yeah! Except I'm not old... I just like taking a break from all this new technology every once in a while :) . Last year out in Ohio I spent 2 days calling up local abandoned air strips to see if they would allow a old style drag race... I was turned down by at least 30 police/property owners :( .

Looks cool, and the Zeli airport is only about 30 mins from where I went to school. :)

i'm interested in going. it would have to be a multi-day event for me, though, as i could barely drive that distance in one shot (much less drag race then drive home). if you're interested in hooking up a coupla days, perhaps with justin's help we could find other things to do out there to fill out a weekend?

There is plenty to do. Lots of nice backroads to cruise, and Pittsburgh is a great city. We'll have to make a long weekend out of one of those dates.

holy ****, thats near where I used to live, most of my family still lives there. Hell, if I could get off work and go I would ove rthe summer dates.
Lately I have been wanting to take a trip out there and visit some of my family that I havent seen in awhile. Im originally from Butler PA, Zelienople is just west of on the other side of I-79.
Oh hell yeah! If i ever get the F'ing mustang on the road, I'd head out there. I went to school near Pitt, so I know I can drive it in one shot  . the fastest I ever made it home from there was 4 1/2 hours. It usually takes 6 hours 8) . But yeah, its nice out there and I wouldn't mind going back out there for some old skool racin!

it is somewhere around 5.5-6 hours from ewing to pittsburgh usually.
so is everyone voting for august 20th?
only thing is that i will be working until around 4 in the 19th. so the trip out would be an evening adventure for me. if anyone wants to run out with me i would prolly leave around 6pm and get out there around midnight.
the other option is to head out saturday am and come home sunday. what do you guys think is best?

no, KOLL, we're talking about a weekend dealy. read the thread!!!
heading out friday night would be cool, then up at a decent hour saturday for the festivities... head home sometime on sunday (or monday for those who don't have to shuttle right off for work).

ok, we will spend teh weekend of august 20th out there.
now we have to route plan, and if someone could look up hotel info that would be great. always prefer national chains if possible, something with internet for free is always best :)
as far as the way out there goes it looks like rt80 and the pa turnpike are both realistic options. i can deal with either one.
lets here some ideas and get this thing together gang!!! :)

This is how I used to go out there. I'd take 287 to 78, then 78 all the way to 81. From 81 I would hop on 76 near carlisle. then I would get off at the exit for 99 and take that to 22, cause my school was right off of 22 in Blairsville. I don't know how close to Pittsburgh 76 actually gets, I'm too lazy to look on a map  .
Pittsburgh raceway park is also out there on 22. really close to Wyotech, but the elevation is a little high, so times would suffer a bit.

Even with the gas prices as they are I refuse to use the PA turnpike since they jacked their prices as high as they did. Used to be $11.25 to ride the whole way through, then last summer sometime it went to over $20. Figure what $10 in gas get's you in miles and I think rt.80 is a much better choice. That's just me though. If I'm tagging along in a car I wouldn't mind paying a part of the toll but by myself, never.
edit: Yup, definatly going rt.80 since all online mapping services say it's the fastest way and it appears to be looking at the location. 76 runs too far south to be a logical rt. almost 6 hours and 400 miles from my house exactly.
yeah, like I said, thats just how i went to and from school. If there is a better/cheaper way, I'm all for it. 8)

Rt 31 --> Rt 46 --> I-80 is how I always went to school. We could meet the northerners on 46 (hot dog johnnys?) and head across from there. I always got off at exit 29 (Rt 8 ) That would be about 30-35 minutes from Zeli, and there is a pretty nice Super 8 just off of the exit.
That's just one option.

are you talking about grove city? three super 8s showed up in the search: grove city, harrisville and franklin (which is too far north). there is a group rate available if there are more than 9 of us needing a room.

This is the one I was talking about:
Super 8 Motel - Barkeyville
Route 8 North and Interstate 80
(814) 786-8375
There is also:
Super 8 Motel - Grove City
Exit 113/I79
west past Prime Outlets
800-800-8000
The Grove City one is in a livelier area, and also right by the Prime Outlets, so those who have families could send the wife and kids there for the day if they would like.

so far, we're looking at $84.88-94.88 per room depending on the bed(s). two double beds is $89.88, average out to $45 each if you don't mind sharing a room with someone.

If you guys come across Interstate 80, that will be perfect because that'll run right past me and just about everyone that will be joining us along the way. I'm willing to bet I could bring at least 4 other cars besides myself with the possibility of many more.
Looks like Mikey will be tuning my car with the new cam on Friday and I should have the new wet kit set up before the end of July so I should be ready to have some fun at the drags.

I think that Saturday morning would work best to head out. The drags don't start until late in the afternoon. Also, God forbid, someone should break, we'd already have a place to stay that night and time to figure out what to do.
