So, I may soon be a proud owner of a 1967 Camaro SS. The owner has shown it at car shows and won 2nd place for Loudest Car(not a good or bad thing i guess). He says the car is 75% restored. Needs a paint job. New polyeurathane bushings and torsion bars. New lopier cam. Going to check it out tommorow and hope my dad will co-sign for a loan. He is asking for around $8000. He also ran 14.9 before he got a new rear-end

ya, I may have to sell the '02 down the road, but I would rather have a first-gen. Only 18 so I don't think I can afford to keep two cars around. I only have daily driver '89 Maxima because it was given to me, but that will be sold probably to help pay for this car!

It'll be cool for some photo-ops!

Do your homework to make sure it's a real, legit SS. There are codes to look for on the trim tag on the firewall to tell if it's a real SS. For that price it's most likely a 327 car that somebody slapped some SS emblems on. On the trim tag, look for the line that begins with a "4" like this:

There should be a "4P", "4N" or "4K" if the car is a real SS. The "4P" could be a 327/275 hp car though so it gets tricky. But I would assume it's not an SS and if it's still a nice car then it might be worth buying.

You learn something new every day, I didn't even know they made '67 SS's. I thought they came out in '68.

thanks for the tip, I'm leaving now to go check out the car, I still may not be able to get it. My dad is refusing to co-sign on a loan for me and I haven't recieved any answers back from a few places I applied too.

IMO, I wouldn't go down that path. A new rear isn't gonna help it drop 1.5 seconds in the quarter (unless he went from 2.14s to 3.73s or something LOL). Think of all the other things; what gears in the rear, what trans? If he did it old school, it probably has a Turbo 350 with 3.73s; not the best for highway cruising or any sort of gas mileage. It's something to consider when gas is over $2 a gallon. When he says it's 75% restored, what's left to do? You said it needs paint, so how is the body? If it's in primer, I'd be wary of who did the "work", and how it was done. It could be Bondo city beneath that spiffy primer. Between rust repair and a proper paintjob that could set you back $5000 easily, turning a car you owe $$ on into more of a money pit. And you might eventually have to drive it daily; snow, rain, etc? Your LS1 is a reliable ride, I'd stick with it unless you find a mint 1st gen that needs nothing.

that would lead him down the 5 figure road, and more toward the middle than the cheap side of the road, at that. if it's not in terrible shape, it might make a good investment for the future. if there is no visible rust, i would venture to say that the metal would last 5-10 years before needing a complete overhaul.

but the number 75 had me guessing, too. what constitutes a 75% complete car? how did he arrive at that number? still, i'd go check it out to see how much of an eyesore it is. more likely it's in need of a complete interior.

take a magnet with you if you're worried about deep bondo. :shrug: every good paint job had some bondo under it.

ok, so as you all thought, it isn't a real SS. I really don't car all that much. It looks like a pretty new 350 underneath. High-lift cam with a glasspack exhaust. This car sounds awesome! The new rearend is 12-bolt 3.73 that he hasn't raced yet. New leaf springs, polyeurathane bushings and torsion bars. He has reciepts for the almost everything, the rear, the new MSD Ingnition box. The bottom corners of the doors are the worst on the body and even that isn't bad at all. It has a black paint job with a sealer on top. Black interior. He might throw in a pair of slicks he has laing around he only made one pass on. the interior looked pretty good at a quick glance, I sat inside at the seats felt great. THe headliner needs to be redone because it is sagging a little bit. He has pictures of the previous owner sand-blasting the front frame, with the front clip all off. I really don't care about gas mileage, although this car will be driven a bit. Tires on it look pretty new. The guy selling it knows his stuff. He did a complete fiberglass install in his S10, looks good there and he is opening up a custom detailing/modification shop up. That is why he wants to sell the car(s), needs quick cash. It has a new floorpan under the trunk as well. Even if the car is gonna be a project car, it still is a decent deal.

If this falls through and it is alright with the owner I will pm people who want his info, but he is looking to move this car relativly quickly.

totally forgot he also has a 3000 stall and a line lock in it too

No torsion bars on Camaros. Are you talking about traction bars on the rear? Check the body closely, it's real easy to hide rot on the old Camaros. The price tells me he's hiding something.
