hey gang,
i would like to get some feedback on something.
one of the biggest road blocks we come up against as a club is promotion of who we are and what we do. i was wondering if we coudl get 2 or 3 volunteers to be our semi-official club photographers for some of teh upcoming meets.
this woudl resolve a number of issues issues when it comes to trying to promote. making flyers is easier when all teh pics are the same quality and format, the more high quality and different style pics of cars the more versions of our flyers we can put out, we could also put together better presentation/proposal materials when we look for companies to sponsor club activities.
only thing that woudl be needed to do this is a good digital camera and some knowledge of how to take cool pics. we would also want to try to keep track of who's car the pics are of. we would like to be able to give credit to owner and photographer when we put out stuff.

so, anyone want to volunteer?

thanks
tim

I would volunteer if I had a better camera. My cam takes really good pics but could be a tad better. Plus I have a Mini DV Camcorder if a video man is ever needed.

video is always helpful. we can put together really good presentations if we can include a dvd :)
i dunno a lot about digi cams, i know that my older 4.0mp takes nice shots. would it be fair to call that a basis for what we are looking for?
we need quality action and still shots. if you think you can get them, go for it.

one thing i think i forgot to mention is that we want to focus on members cars. since we are using these pics/vids to promote the club, we want to keep teh spotlight on the members, not jsut any f-body we see.

i will be there camera in hand trying to get good pics. is there a place in this parking lot where we can get all the f-bodies together to get a good group picture? that would be a killer start to the photo collection :)

We need a picture repository for members to upload too. I'd like to take some pictures with my digital camera of members and their rides. Problem is I'm the only person that knows where these pictures are and how to get to them. Having a repository would allow us to upload pictures for members to view and super members to pick from for flyers and misc publishings.

justin and i talked about somehting like that. it would turn into a storage issue very quickly the way things look.

Yahoo has groups that would allow this but it requires Yahoo user names. I don't see a problem with this and they also have space for files like tech articles, etc.

i've got unused web site space on my home ISP. i never paid any attention to it because i had the geocities site and i remember what a pain it was to port everything over.

so, how much space are we talking about, anyway? wouldn't one of the free web site servers, like geocities, offer enough storage under one account to hold the photos? ultimate control would be the web site owner, presumably one of you guys, and people could email their submissions to you. then it's just a matter of moving them up to the site and adding them to the index.

If I'm not mistaken, they have 20gigs of storage through the host of the site. However, high quality pics take up a lot of room. With almost 500 members now, assuming half would post pics, you could easily use that storage space with one or 2 pics per member.

Geocities and the like are no good for this, as they offer less space, and they are a pain in the ass for bandwidth usage and such.

People could pool their unused webspace together, but then you have pictures in 20 different places.

Seems to me there's no good solution for it at the moment.

didn't f-bodygallery offer to host pics?

we are planning to add space with event pics, research data, and tech articles to teh site. that is why we are being cautious about adding space to openly upload photos and vids.

if anyone has teh time/web space to set something up to host for everyone that would be very helpful and much appreciated.

on a side note, i'll be willing to do some tech articles and such. and what type of research data are we talking here?

NJSPEEDER

production data, rpo/cowl tag translation, vin translation, parts ID/interchange, print/tv ads, owners manuals, sales brochures, service/upgrade/trouble shooting articles.

the part that makes all this so restrictive is that everything is proposed to be very image heavy. sizes of ads and such will be changed to fit easily into a singel screen, but we don't want to lose so much quality that they are unreadable. this is challenging with old advertising since the printing was often small to begin with. that leads to some pretty big files.

I nominate TransAm4Life. He takes good pictures, and still has connections to get things professionally printed. He has a decent digital camera that I hear he knows how to work, plus alot of space on his hard-drive for pictures, even has his own website to stash things on, oh and can burn DVD with assloads of pictures he takes. Ive seen his work. I like it.

I vote for me. j/k. I suck at photography.

However, I do have my own domain, with about 1 GB that I could sacrifice for solely image space, as well as 50 GB of bandwidth per month (should be more than enough). Images on websites don't/shouldn't have to be the full 4 megapixels. They could be cropped down to 100 - 200 KB and still look pretty sweet on anyone's computer screen.

This may be a little late, but I'd be willing to volunteer. I've got a 8.0 MP Nikon digital camera that I use that takes pretty dang good pictures.

More volunteers are always good :)

On a side note, I've been looking into photo/media galleries to use on the site, and I found this:

Has anyone used it?

I used to be on a gaming forum that used the forum gallery. It worked pretty well IMHO.

you could always just make a page... and have all the pics in thumbnails.. and just link to where they are... so even if they arnt located all on this one site... they will still all be tehre ... and have the illusion they are in one spot. just have it all linked in thumbnail format to this site :)

just an idea i guess

Yea, I can do that, pretty easily. Only problem with that is that it requires constant maintence by me. I'm looking for something that others could upload too without constant aproval from an admin.

It was a Quake3 clan forum. Quake3 is old now, meaning the site was taken down. Give me today to find another one, I've seen plenty that use it

Thanks for the offer, I'll keep you in mind if we end up going that route. I'd rather have something that is fairly self sufficient though, that way pics are always available immediately, and no single person is to blame if there is a problem.
