MONTREAL - American Chelsea Davis hit her face on the diving board during the 3-meter springboard preliminaries Friday at the World Swimming Championships.

Davis was attempting an inward 2 1/2 somersault in the tuck position when her face struck the board. Blood poured out of her nose and stunned spectators covered their faces.

Helpers jumped into the pool and pulled her out. She was put on a stretcher and taken for treatment nearby.

"She's fine," U.S. diving team leader Bob Rydze said. "She's moving all her limbs. She just needs a few stitches."

Davis, a 17-year-old diver who trains in Columbus, Ohio, was competing in her first senior-level world championships.

The fourth round of competition resumed after a brief delay.

She's lucky she didnt break her neck. Hopefully she'll return to diving and not let this scare her away.

She's from Columbus Ohio, you expected different? j/k I'm glad she's okay. Spring board is ten times better than platform although I think they need to redo the ends of the boards to make them safer. There are lighter flexible foams they could use that would give plenty of traction without the dangers.
