F1 engines are crazy. so teams are shifting as high as 21K and using 7spd gear boxes.
it must be nice to have all those parts made out of super light unobtainium and machine work so precise that there isn't a single gasket in the whole drive train. :D
the crazier part is that they have to use 1 engine for 2 consecutive race weekends and it is sealed before the start of the first weekend of use.
according to some of the tech nerds once the engine formula changes to the proposed V8's we will see 23-25K engines. that is gonna be nuts to hear.
i have a short video clip from the USGP 2 years ago. i will find it and post it up here. it is back from when most teams were shifting at "only" 18.5K.

My camaro has hit (and run above) 7k no problem.

That's pretty insane. My personal best is 16k on an unrestricted 600cc Honda F4i. We opened the dyno door... it was insane. That was on a motored dyno where the dyno was holding the RPM so I could motor the engine to whatever speed I wanted. We could have gone to 20k but I have a feeling the rods would have been sticking out of the block.... and yes I had that happen to me and it wasn't as much fun.

just in case anyone cares, the LS7 has a redline of 7100 RPM....if i'm not mistaken, that's unheard of on a production pushrod engine. GM is pushing the boundary of OHV vs. OHC technology a lot....

NASCAR cars run 10K rpms every so often and they have pushrods. A lot of circle track cars run those kinds of revs, its all in how you set the motor up.

correct, but the LS7 has a little bit mroe "cool" facotor being that its an engine that is built for the street, and still has to meet emissions standard and driveability, AND make 500hp.
