You really can't "tub" a thirdgen without switching to a completely different rear suspension setup. Sure you can make the wheelwells a bit bigger, but the gas tank sits directly over the rear axle, so that would have to be moved. Then you have coil springs, shocks, and LCA's all within a few inches of the current tire. They would all have to be moved/replaced.
If you are looking to hook, it's much easier and more cost effective to build the current suspension design to the max, rather than trying to throw lots of tire at the problem

how fast is the project car intended to go?
honestly, chra stock guys who have to run real "stock style" suspension have taken torque arms into the low 8's so far. so anything less than an outlaw 10.5 car that needs to find 7.1's or better to win should be on stock suspension

not translating to hands otr wallet yet? lol
low 7's are a nice $150k budget to get started :)
and that doesn't include fuel or any spares or a trailer or a truck to tow

is it your mission in life to talk everyone out of changing the aging technology under the rear end of our thirdgens? :D
there are so many reasons other than hooking, bigger tire, etc - stuff having to do with going fast in a straight line - to change out the thirdgen rear suspension. one is that the technology is 20 years old.

Rick Head has been 7.66 @ 186mph on stock style front/rear suspension and DRAG RADIAL tires in his 3rd gen camaro. tubbing, ladder bars, 4-links, etc = no fun whatsoever.
