View Full Version : Got the Alero Smacked Up Today

hey gang,
i was on my way over to talk to teh guy who is going to machine my block for the motor i want to build over the winter and i got into a pretty good accident.
i am ok. stiff, banged around a bit, but everything on me shoudl "buff right out" so to speak. that is a lot better than what i can say for teh car.
short version of what happened:
i was on old lincoln highway in penndel, pa heading west from work to frank bash's machine shop. i slowed down as i came up to the place and let some traffic go by so i could make my turn.
i had my signal on, slowed normally, let an oncomign car go past, started to trun left and all of a sudden.........WHAMMMMOOOO!!!!!
some ass hat wasn't paying attention and nailed me. best part is that he hit the drivers door!!!!!
instead of slamming on the brakes in a straght line or weaving to is right(there are 2 lanes each way on this road) he weaves to the left and locks up teh tires.
he told the cop he was doing 40(the posted speed limit) but i am betting he was going better than that. prolly 30ft of skids marks before the point of impact and 20 after.
i was shook to say teh least and this ******* then proceeds to get out of the car and start yelling at me that he honked adn i couldn't hear it over my radio. i was thinking WTF does taht have to do with you not knowing how to drive? at least i think that is what he was going off about, not real sure since he hardly spoke any english(those who know me understand how happy that makes me)
i had to climb over teh console and get out on the passenger side.
drivers side of the car is trashed. door destroyed, a-pillar looks tweaked, fender destroyed, cowl area looked twisted.....you get teh idea.
lucky for me there were 2 witneses walking out of the auto shop that is the front fo the building when all this happened. according to teh cop the witnesses and i all have teh same story and the dick wad that hit me was trying to say i slammed on the brakes and swerved without signaling. that still doesn't explain why he crossed into the oncoming lane and hit me, but it is his story so he gets to tell it his way.
cop said the other guy is getting at least 2 tickets(more once they measure out the skid marks to confirm his speed) and that i was in no way at fault.
i get to take off from work tomorrow, although i will prolly be in a bit of pain so that is sort of useless. :?

Glad to hear you're ok Tim. Sorry about the car, but at least it was the beater. Hopefully the insurance company wont hassle you.
And yeah, its amazing how people completely in the wrong will argue very loudly, and very determinedly that you did something to cause the accident. Its even worse with a thick accent.
Good luck.

thanks everybody.
i am doin good. as of now there is no need for the prescriptions they gave me. they did warn me that i will feel it more tomorrow morning.
i am just a little stiff from getting rattled around. no big deal considering the potential consequences.
at least the doctor at teh hospital gave me a pass for work tomorrow. if i am not too stiff i guess i will just have to get some work done on my camaro :)
i am thinking i will also take teh drive over to talk to frank bash about my short block, hopefully this time i will actually make it into the parking lot. :?

not sure if it is going to be totaled or not. shoudl be a nice big number though.
it is the door, front fender, and all teh **** that connects in between. the left front suspension is also completely mangled. it is still a fairly new car, so i don't know what percentage they will total it out at.

Total it and get something different.
NJSPEEDER
08-19-2005, 03:12 PM
not up to me. insurance says 75% of valueis teh automatic total point. there is a wide margin where they will get my feedback on if they shoudl save it or not.
i am honestly not sure what is better for me. with used car prices dropping the way they have recently my car isn't worth too much, so if it is totaled i basically get nothing back from it. but if i get it back it won't have nearly the resale value because it has been in a major accident.
in the meantime i get to spend $8 a day renting a car and making payments on a car that may be totaled.
i did already start shopping in case teh car is gone. figured i may as well be prepared. i am gonna shop for a full size pick up, nothign fancy, just a pick up with a V8 that i can do some mild towing/hauling with.

i was planning a trip to my family doctor to follow up on my neck. i don't think it will turn anything up, but i want to be safe about this. only symptoms i have had the whole time are more like muscle strain than anything else. actually i feel almost back to 100%. only slightly stiff if i try to turn my head all the way to the right.
foff667, i am looking at pick up trucks. nothing fancy, 1500 chevy or dodge, V8 4wd. that is only if the car is totaled and i decide to buy new. if i go used i will likely end up with another f-body :) the only new car that i am really interested in is the solstice with teh turbo motor, and that won't be out until the '07 model year anyway(240hp and 2350lbs :D).

had the car for exactly 8 months, dec 18 2004 - aug 18 2005. odometer had 75 miles on it when i picked it up and 15, 748.3 when it was killed.

If you're looking for opinions Tim, I would vote for the truck. You already have the f-body to work on. Get something that is practical, but isn't a gas hog - well, something better than 10mpg.
Depending on how often you have people in your car, you might consider a crew cab.
Like you said, nothing fancy, but will do what you need it to do.
Then get back to work on the Camaro.

The m5's were notorious for being week ( as are the chrysler/dodge's m5's). Because of how the 700 operates, the band anchor pins take a lot of abuse when shifting to 2nd and 4th. Add 5000lbs and in upwards of 600 horse, and you're asking for trouble. I knew going into this deal that the 700r4 would probably not be able to handle what I was going to throw at it. I was hoping that using the best of the best parts would make it strong enough to handle the power and weight, but obviously it can't. ANYHOW, I said hemi's were gay, not the transmissions that backed them ( although if you go on any hemi boards you'll see that trannies and rears are breaking at an astounding rate). And for the record ( ask Justin) I'm still driving it even with the sheared pin and gaurantee I'll kill any hemi junker even in it's current state!!! Thank you, that is all

my only thing against him getting a truck is gas mileage...he likes to go here & there to events, meets & whatever...not to mention his work is rarely near his home...getting 10-15mpg in a full size truck whether new or old IMO wouldnt be his best option...personally if I were in his position & knew a full out race car was a couple of years away I'd get a decent gas mileage beater like kelly's hyundai...probably gets 25-30mpg and isnt horrible to look at & drive every day for a couple of years & its something that could be had for less then 5 grand meaning either a very short term loan or if he had the $ saved up he could pay for it outright & go from there...I dont personally think he needs a truck but im not him nor am I in his shoes so i dunno what he needs.

A truck is always handy to have, but I agree with Bill when it comes to practicality. He put ~15k miles on the Alero in 8 months, and doing that in a truck would have cost about double at the gas pump. IIRC the Alero knocked down over 30mpg on a regular basis.
