View Full Version : gas prices

can anyone explain to me why gas prices went up? does anyone know why gas prices need to be $2.50/gallon as opposed to $1.00/gallon like they were a few years ago? is it just the greedy ****s of OPEC, or is there an economical reason? once i heard that OPEC daily profit was in the millions of dollars, i think i lost my mind.

now they're talking about another price increase because the hurricane interrupted the normal flow of oil into our country. i guess louisiana has more going for it than just mardi gras.

further, aren't we supposed to have gas reserves in our country? well, i think now might be a good time to break them open and lower the damn price of gas. i've seen fillups go from $10 +/- up to $36 this week. there has to be a logical explanation other than some sheik wanting to add a wing onto his palace. yes, i know the middle east is low on the scale of our oil providers, but they have enormous pull on the council.

They are supposidly going to break into the oil reserves. Bush has to make a decision today.

i doubt they will. isnt he making a ton of money cuz the oil prices are so high? he is in the oil business crap after all

I think someone mentioned on this board that for every $1 gas goes up, he makes $40 million. That's quite the return.

Actually, think about it this way. Thank god we are paying these prices now, cuz a couple years ago when it was $1.60, we were paying like $35 a barrel. Now its $70 a barrel, and average is $2.80. Do the math. That means Bush is pocketing/keeping 40 cents every gallon of gas. Correct?

dz

I liked when it was $.99. Those were the days.

I also saw an article on AOL about the economy in Iraq. They're still paying .$05 (yes, 5 cents!) a gallon there. Even some of the areas rich in oil production are paying $1.50ish a gallon.

bush doesnt own the entire nations supply of oil...so how would he be pocketing it?

and the nations reserves is about 700 million barrels...we go through a little over a million barrels a day...we'd run out within a few years and prices would go back up.

I blame China & India, their currently the worlds top 2 oil consumers. Even more oil then Americans.

Fasterthanyou

I blame the human race. As much as I like burning fuels it's rather rediculous looking at how we waste it! Think about it, how many of us drive just ourselves around. It's a huge waste. We need to start car pooling again. I've started doing it and it helps a LOT. I drive 1/2 people a day now because we all found ourselves going out to lunch together and it's not much out of the way for me to pick them up in the morning. Besides, when you're in traffic it's sometimes nice to talk to somebody other than the guy cutting you off after using the shoulder as a bonus lane.
Think of it this way, if we start doing that, our consumption would go down 20-25% and we could put that saved fuel into a missle to scare the crap out of China for ******** up our economy. Maybe a little boycot on the imported China goods is in order... They're really ticking me off. They ruined the OSU FSAE team by buying up all the CF.

At least you dont need a lisence for one of them. But I think the price in Food & Care would equal to owning a car.

jims69camaro
08-30-2005, 01:02 AM
i don't go anywhere and i can't afford to put gas in my car. Â*it's insane. Â*i'm not saying to just start using only our reserves, that would be idiotic. Â*but if we subsidized our use with our own reserve, we could at least get their attention. Â*they'd see we weren't buying as much and they'd have to lower their price for us to go back to where we were buying.

they say demand is driving the price up. Â*other than day to day driving, has anyone been doing anything else? Â*i mean, vacationing in florida? Â*visiting relatives in colorado? Â*not with gas at the price it is now, i don't think. Â*the difference between $1.50 and $2.60 (national average) equals $400 +/- extra per year on a typical 15,000 mile usage. Â*i'd rather have the extra $400 than have to fork it over to the oil producing countries.

and the unique thing is, no one knows why the prices have increased so much. Â*that's my whole reason for asking the question. Â*nobody can answer it.

Ian

the price of oil increased because they knew we would still buy it even at the higher cost. Why the hell would they lower the price if we are "content" paying what we are now? the entire time gas prices have been rising, there has been no decrease in sales. it doesnt take a moron to figure out the oil companies are going to milk this until its dry.

am actually going to start looking for a nice bike to ride to work (bicycle, not motorcycle) if gas prices keep going up. luckily I'm only about 5 or 6 miles from where I work, so it wouldnt be too bad.

it is simple to understand why gas prices go up. how else are you going to make your car move?
if you have a monopoly that controls 88% of teh worlds oil resources(OPEC)you get to pick the price cause you know everyone has to come to you to some degree or another.
i think what they do is ******, but at teh same time it is the same basis that our economy uses to set prices for everything else. so how surprised can we actually be.
the gulf region does contribute about 30% of the oil in the US. so that is gonna effect the price of gas in the next few weeks as well.

Yeah, that's going to suck and last time I checked there weren't any international monopoly laws meaning we need to get tighter with Canada if we're going to survive the long run. Think about it, Canada is giving a lot to China... we're screwed if they can undercut our prices. Somehow the US coprs need to start buying up stocks of these booming Chinese companies. That way we all profit. Becase as we sit the Chinese are buying up OUR stock. Remember that rummor that Toyota might have enough cash to be the majority stock holder of GM (meaning they own GM)... it's not far from being true.

a lot of that has to do with the gas companies telling the local stations what they are allowed to charge.

They're now saying to expect prices to go up to $4 a gallon very soon thanks to the hurricane. There's no way they can justify these prices when you look at their continued record profits. The gov't needs to step in and stop this price gouging. I'm soooo glad my daily driver is getting 20 mpg right now. The old DD(454SS pickup) got around 11 mpg.

I was literally in shock driving to work this morning. Last night, I filled up on Base for $2.49 for 87 (driving the 99 Celica). This morning on the way to work, what do I see?? Mongans @ Williamstown and Erial Roads: $2.99; Shell @ 534 and 73N: $2.79; Multitudes of other places through Marlton/Mt. Laurel/Pemberton: $2.79-2.99 a gallon, for REGULAR!!!!

If supply and demand is driving up prices, then why in the hell are the oil companies posting record profits like they've been for the past year or so??? Supply and demand my nut.

Absolutely NOTHING justifies a 30 cent hike in a single day. Nothing. I understand that the hurricane is putting strains on the system now, but there's absolutely no way that it can be that much of an effect that fast.

I seriously think it's time for the government to step in, say "piss off" to OPEC, and start to regulate the petroleum industy here in the states.

Exxon/Mobil are the largest so their prices change slower (generally speaking) and their supply is usually more stable. Places like Raceway gas and Lora's all have small supply chains in comparison. This results in them paying more for the same gas, the only good thing about them is that they have less overhead so USUALLY they're cheaper than the big Exxon/Mobil and Shell/BP's.
As for gas, just keep topping off. Gas prices aren't going to drop so the least you can do is keep the tank full of the cheapest gas. That's what I've been doing for the past week. All my cars are near full, the 2 Hemi's are a royal PITA. I don't think the MDS is doing jack squat for mileage because I'm averaged to 18mpg. I drive like I'm on empty so that 18 is the best these cars will do :( .

Heard on the radio today someone made a parody of the Bud Light real men of genius songs. Went something like.... "Today we salute you, mr. gas price gas price gouger. We see a disaster, you see a way to rip us off for more money" Forget the actual words but you get the idea.

I haven't put gas in my truck or car at all this week. My car has a 1/4 tank as well as my truck. I just filled up my bike on my lunch break, 10 bucks!! 2.7 gallons it took. It holds 4.1 total. And all the place had left was 93 octane.

I roughly am getting 41 MPG city driving. So, my ass will be planted on that thing as much as i can. Weather looks good for the next few days, and if it doesn't then i luckly work less then 2 miles from my house.
