View Full Version : Sometimes getting pissed off works

i was working on the camaro, getting it ready for it's "inspection" when i closed the door and heard an odd thud inside teh car. i tunred around and didn't see anything so i didn't think much of it.
i tuned the carb a bit more and then went to get in the car to take it for a test drive. that is when i noticed teh rear view mirror sitting in my seat. i am sure it was comfortabel and all, but i liked it up where it was, you know, so i could SEE WHILE I DRIVE!!!!
i had to run to the store anyway for a bulb for my mom's car so i grabbed one of those kits that is supposed to resecure teh mirron to the windshield. after following teh 900 step process on teh instructions i had the mirror support in place and i left it there to dry. i get out of teh car, close teh door, and hear a decidedly smaller thud than last time. i turned around to see the support sitting in my seat. i guess teh support wanted the seat and teh miror was just following along. grrrrr
i tried a second time, same result. so i went in teh garage, grabbed a self tapping screw, ran it through the mirror base and into the lip of teh sheet metal where it is all double layer.
so i finally get around to taking my car out for that test drive only to find out that the mirror is now positioned much better than it originally was. putting it about 1ft higher inside teh car gave a better view out the back window, teh old position you could get a better view of teh back seat than the road behind the car.
i geuss getting pissed off works out from time to time. teh mirror support now live in teh trash can.

scraped it, cleaned windshield, cleaned everything with alcohol, scraped the old glue off the support piece, cleaned that with alcohol................
the instructions mine came with outlined everything step by step like that. so that is how i did it. still didn't work.
oh well, the screw seems to be staying in :)

:funny:...but really guys its a 2nd gen...that glue was probably 25+ years old...thats why it fell off. Oh and for a funny story...I cant remember which one of my cars the same thing happened the mirror came off...i put bought the stuff to put it back on my windshield went and glued it on. Went to put the mirror on, whoops, put it on the windshield backwards lol...struggled with it for a few to get it off & had to reset it...fun ****

You know Tim, if you scrap the mirror you'll probably lighten the car by 8 ounces. Thats at least worth a 100th of a second.

Cut the glass in half lengthwise, make it thinner, shave some weight off

What is the weight difference between the screw and the original mirror base+glue?

im kinda pissed myself that tim didnt throw the mirror away and hold a womans compact mirror in the air instead for greater weight savings :)

i actually know where to buy carbon fiber rear views like teh ones that get used in race touring cars :D
if they were 800bucks i woudl consider it. as of now it remains one of those" when i hit the lottery....." ideas :)

the same people make carbon fiber steering wheels for about 1500 :D
they have momentary buttons available, so you could hook up a horn to make it all street legal
