Only thing I don't agree with is the whole mandatory evacuation and they should of all left. Yes, some people just made the excuse that they didn't have a car or whatever. But there were a lot of elderly, sick, and/or handicapped people that could not get out. Hence the use of the dome, NO knew there would be people unable to leave. There were also people in a nursing home not evacuated by the management.
I know we don't get many devestating storms up this way, but if we did, and your only home was demolished, wouldn't you want some help in rebuilding or finding a new home? Should the government rebuild the entire city with our money? Probably not, but help is necessary.
Anyhow, I agree with pretty much everything else in that rant.

I don't think the guy meant the people that were elderly, sick/handicapped... given this situation, there were MANY MANY people that were told to leave, but decided to ride it out. I heard one woman's story on tv, how she and her husband didn't want to leave the city or go to a shelter, but felt it was unsafe to stay in their home... so... they decided to "ride it out" on their BOAT. Pure stupidity. Their boat was demolished during the storm and they had to be saved by rescue workers.
I think the guy is just trying to emphasize the point regarding the ones that could have left, but chose not to... elderly and handicapped excluded.

there were a LOT of people who were told to leave and didn't. The reason was, they had evacuated the city twice before earlier this year because of hurricanes, but nothing happened because of them. when the call came out to evacuate for Katrina, the people thought they were crying wolf this time and stupidly decided to stay.
we shouldn't give a dime to them. i'm almost sorry to say that, but their own stupidity cost them their lives, homes, businesses, etc. also, the governor and mayor of N.O. should be imprisoned. the federal government has been after them for YEARS to fix those damn levees, sending millions of dollars to pay for repairs or reconstruction. Know what they did with it? they spent the money on navigational projects for the Mississippi river. they should get life sentences in jail for the utter neglect and failure to protect their citizens.
i've got an excellent article for all of you...its at my new house so i gotta bring it to my paretns house to scan it in...my english prof. gave it to my class to read...basically a 6 page paper done in september of 2001 detailing exactly what would happen in the event of a large hurricane and teh chances of it happening in the next 5 years
