View Full Version : need info about ls1 ecm's permanent memory
OK, what i need to know is about the information held inside a vehicles ls1 ECM, lets say my '01 SS. Like if the ecm was scanned, what info could be brought up? Â* I was told mileage is recorded in the ecm along with being saved in the cluster itself. Â*Also, does the ecm state year of production? if so, can that be changed? Â*Finally, I think i also remember hearing that the VIN is saved in the ECM as well, is that true? If so, say i need a new ecm, is there a way to reprogram the new ecm with my current VIN? Â*I know all codes/regular history will be erased if the battery has been disconected a certain period of time, so short term isnt a concern, battery has been dead for a few weeks. Â*I could use this information as soon as possible, so thanks to anyone that has any info, oh and if you could do the programming, if its at all possible, let me know. thanks. -Paul
the newest version of HP tuners allows for the VIN to be changed. I dont know about the model year and mileage though.
i wouldnt need to change model year or mileage, id just need a specific ecm, and that i can control by what ecm i possibly buy, the vin is just the main part. I just need the ECM to come back to a my car if for some reason it gets scanned.
yeah, you can change the vin with the newest version of HP tuners.

mileage is only held in the cluster, any dealer can flash your vin or also anyone with hptuners can do it as well.
so you are 100% positive mileage is only in the cluster? is it somehow saved anywhere else in any other computer such as the BCM(body control module) if its only in the cluster, then the ecm and vin doesnt matter anymore.

i wont say 100% but im pretty sure...if i were you id post up in hptuner.com forum or ls1tech.com.
ok thanks, i just need to be sure that if my car gets scanned in any way possible, that any saved mileage in the comp will match my cluster.
now i just gotta pull my headers off and put a complete stock exhaust back on, maybe ill yank the adj. LCAs, panhard, and TQ arm while im under there.
why do you have to put a stock exhaust on?
so it will appear stock, well the drivetrain at least. thats all i really wanna say right now, its a tricky situation i'll be in soon. oh and my 422 stroker is still a winter/spring project and all this has nothing to do with that.
