so I failed it on 4 counts in Paramus today..

Blinker blinking too fast?? Some of you may have seen it recently... it blinks at a normal speed (the paper says the limit is up to i think 130 times per minute... no way that mine is faster than that). I'll catch a video of it later.

Brakes - "failed automated test." Guy said to me - "you have no back brakes and your front ones are too tight." OK, I can see my back brakes being dead from burnouts and also since it's the same rotors, calipers, and pads that were on the junkyard rear when I got it. Fronts being "too tight", i dunno what theyre talking about there. Does anyone know brakes real well that can help me out?

Horn - "inaudible from 200 ft." Fine, whatever, the horns I bought the high note is dead, sounds like a friggin steamboat... I wouldnt say theyre inaudible from 200 ft but failing, ok.

The last one's the best...

on the paper it reads "RIGHT SIDE - MODIFIED EXHAUST" (yes in caps.) Guy said to me - "your exhaust is modified". WTF?!?!?!? the **** is this ****. They passed my license plate being tied on by a piece of string, my alignment being ****ed more than a crack whore outside a rehab center, and my abs, air bag, and brake (i dunno it just started yesterday, dash e-brake light is on but but i fail on having a modified exhaust?!?! they can even fail you for that?!?!?!?!

And what is also funny is how the paper says that I have 45 days to get re-inspected... but if it's not done by 11/30/05 my registration can be suspended  f'in dmv morons. Well I'm glad I put my cat back on before I went... theyve got a nice mirror they go around the car with.

I'm probably gonna shell out the cash now to get new rear pads and rotors, and have a garage I know redo the inspection, cuz im not taking my damn catback off for this state place. I'd appreciate some help on the brakes issue though, if anyone's got any idea.

Dude, just get different tips. I can stick my left leg in one of them if I wanted to. If they see different "stock-looking" tips, just tell them "The exhaust is so shiny because I had it replaced like you told me to".

magnaflow cat backs are 50state emissions legal. you can walk into DMV with the fed/carb information and they will hav eto drop that point of the failure.
your horn not being loud enough, you mentioned that when you were here as well.
rebleed your brakes and try again, maybe throw on some new pads as an added safety measure.
the blinker thing i have never heard before. ask them if they got fresh crack this mornign or some day old **** that had goen bad.

I think they did decibal test me, either that or the guy liked how it sounded and wanted to hold at it a certain rpm (sounded like 2500-3000 to me) for like 2-3 seconds. They didn't say it was too loud just that it was modified, I think they woulda told me if it was a volume issue. Plus i'm pretty sure that it's within the legal limit.

My truck has a magnaflow on it, and it went through the inspection easily. Actually, I think guy was reving it a little at the end just before he got out to put the pass sticker on it.

Actually the best (meaning worst with stupid ********) inspection was with my old red LO3 Bird. Tim remembers the car. I failed for my
1) third brake light being out went into the back seat, tapped it and it worked.
2) Insurance card laminated Since theres no glove box, and everything i own that was in the car was shoved in the center console, the insurance card got crushed all the time. So i was working at office max at the time and i was bored at work so I laminated it. Oh well, no bigge, i got a new one from Allstate like the next day.

This last one is what put me over the edge.
3) Gas Cap
Ok, i went home and grabbed the BRAND NEW gas cap i had on my dead Camaro and went back.
DMV Immagrant "Where is the receipt for the gas cap?"
me "I didn't buy it, I took it off the car that doesn't run"
DMV "state requires you to have a receipt"
me "Why should I buy one when I have a new one that you didn't check yet"
DMV "state requires a receipt"
Me "I DON'T CARE, YOU DIDN'T CHECK THIS ONE YET. IF IT DOESN'T LEAK THEN WHY SHOULD I GO BUY A NEW ONE WHEN THERES ONE SCREWED ONTO THE CAR ALREADY"

this went on for a little bit longer.

then I failed on my current Trans Am for something with my rear left shock being to bouncy or something. I just paid someone 40 bucks to pass it, figured it would be cheaper then new shocks.

I don't have the paperwork from mine, the shop that installed it and fabbed up my Y-pipe musta scrapped it. Try contacting Jim from exhaustguys (or whatever their name is on ther boards, I forget) I'm sure they can help you out...maybe give you a number to call or something. As for your rear brakes, I'd just replace the pads..depending on how bad the rotors are. When I first had the IROC inspected their skidpad showed I had like no rear brakes..I slapped on new pads and was fine. As for the fronts, I wouldn't worry, just bleed all of them like Tim said. I don't understand how they can be "too tight" their meter is a skid pad which shows when the brakes start to grab. They're a bunch of morons, first time I had the RS inspected the retard set it up on the emissions dyno with the front wheels on the rollers and started to chock the rear wheels  I've heard once you fail you'll have a hard time getting it to pass, unless it is truely legit and you replaced everything. The IROC's inspection is due november and there is no way I'm passing lol I have to call my friends mom at DMV and try to switch registration to collectors. Only thing I'm worried about is on their site it says you can only swap it over when the registration is up..mines up in April, So for probably this month and March I'll have to watch out......perhaps lol

the best is to get 2 people. Have your wheel off with newspaper all around and make sure you get the proper size wrench and are turning in the correct direction..don't strip them..don't ask me why I included that  have someone inside the car pump the brakes up till they are hard and have them keep the pressure on. loosen the valve and air (if there is any) will shoot out and then fluid will shoot out. You repeat this till the only thing that comes out is a stream of fluid, no bubbles or anything. They sell self bleeder valves, but personally I wouldn't trust them. You could also buy a plastic hose that will fit over the valve..loosen the valve first, slap the hose on and have the other end in a constainer of brake fluid..then pump the pedal yourself and the air will be pushed out and the only thing that can get sucked back in is brake fluid. I think getting another person is easier.

The rear brakes don't do much braking on these cars and if your rotors and pads are worn pretty bad then the fronts will be doing almost 95-100% of the braking and that's probably why they said the front was too tight. Get new pads and rotors for the rear and it will probably balance out a lot better but it still might need bleeding.

That's what I was thinking. The front pads are ~new, and really good ones. If it's not pulling to one side or the other, I agree with Jeff and say it's actually that the rear brakes aren't strong enough. Time for new pads and rotors out back maybe?

And Kasey, the bleeder valves are on the calipers. They are probably 10mm nuts with a hole and short tube on them for the brake fluid to come out of. I believe they're on the top, but I could be wrong.

Yup, the rear brakes don't do that much work on the F-body but if properly bled with new pads/rotors, they work great! I've been driving my 96 all week and it has new pads/rotors and it stops awesome! I just got back in my 88 4Runner and almost ran through the first stop sign! These brakes are horrible. Looks like time for an upgrade because I doubt they'll pass inspection in June.

so I hate when bolts (like the ones holding the caliper onto the whole assembly) are on so tight that i put an aluminum pipe on the end of the ratchet for some more leverage and it rips a hole through the aluminum... pads are changed, old rotors are getting another shot tomorrow with a breaker bar...

This is too funny. I always go near the middle of the month right when they open. Never had a problem except for my high-mount being dead. They rightly failed me for it. Turns out I unplugged the wire when working on the rear hatch assembly. I changed bulbs and plugged it back in and passed easily.

Oh, and if you think you might fail on emissions go on the wettest muggiest day possible. The extra moisture in the atmosphere will help you pass.

Just got back from Wayne.. everything passed except the exhaust but not because it's modified but rather too loud.

I call the number on the paper because I realized I should ask how mant decibles it registered at... and they tell me that they dont measure it, but rather it's up to the discretion of the inspector.

That's ******** since its in an enclosed building... also ******** because the new rejected sticker lasts until 45 days from the FIRST inspection... which is today.

The inspector told me change the muffler and I'd be fine... but if this all is true that Ridgewood doesnt give a **** I'm gonna try them first.

volume must be tested based on an outdoor setting under light loud at a constant rpm. the tester can not personally decide what is or isn't too loud since the national/state standard is written down at a specific db rating. i believe it is 90or 95 db to be exact. either one is much louder than your car can be at any rpm.

That is the impression that I was under as well, but the DMV and a private station I called both told me that for inspection it is up to the inspector.

If anyone knows where I can get an OFFICIAL decible reading then that would work, if I go in ther ewith official paperwork saying it's within the legal limit then they can't argue with that. That would be good to keep in the car too in case a cop decides to question it

Kasey your local Police Department is supposed to carry at least one Decibal tester. Im sure if you called them up and talked to them maybe they can do you some good, with an official print out as well.

the only mention of a replacement muffler is on page 24, which says it's acceptable if the muffler is made for the vehicle and the company certifies that is has a safe exhaust gas exit.

i have yet to find any mention of sound levels, even in the motor vehicle code (which the cops use to write tickets). i'm tired, i'll look more tomorrow.

At this point I would probably get it tested and show some proof of what the decibel level is really at. If you go to a different inspection station then those inspectors might not want to overrule the first inspector so proof would be helpful. Didn't your mom tell you not to put fart pipes on your Camaro!;)

I didn't say that. Even the V8 Camaros shouldn't have dual 3" fartpipes on them.:nono:

coming from someone that used to do inspections at a private place, if the exhaust is 50 state legal then it's 50 state legal!!! the part about the noise is up to the inspector, but if yoiu have the documentation from the manufacturer of the company then that should be all you need.

just to show you how f'ed up DMV is, when i had my 93 Z28 they failed me for rear brakes. i went back the next day after running around a bit and went through again and passed. no pads, no rotors, same ***** that was on the day before.

i let my girl take my 96 last time it was due. it had all the not good stuff still on it. blacked out tail lights, blacked out blinkers, tinted windows, exhaust that wasn't 50 state legal, CAI that screamed when you got on it, and cheater slicks that weren't even close to D.O.T. approved and they PASSED IT!!!!!!!!! i guess it helps if your girl is hot and wears a skimpy outfit. they stared at her more than they checked the car. they even warned her about the stuff it should have failed for and told her be careful if she gets pulled over in it.

hows that for some serious ********?

My dad thinks they might just be ****ing around with me since I'm young, he's gonna take the car through one of the places (he's saying go to one I haven't been to yet, they haven't seen my car, I'm thinking Ridgewood) and see if they pass it with him taking it in.

Also i stopped by the tenafly police station tonight... one cop was looking thru the books and one was looking on the computer, there is NO decible limit or specific test, it's pretty much a judgement call for the cops too.

With that said, the one looking thru the books told me he used to have an 87 with a vette motor and flowmaster, said it was loud as hell setting off alarms blah blah and he passed inspection with it... said mine being a v6 with magnaflow theres no way that its "too loud" since a V8 with exhaust really isnt "too loud"... said i should just take it to a different place

i came up empty on the internet, as well. no decibel limit or way to test it. i think your dad is right, they are probably just effing with you because you are young. see if he can get it through, then that'll satisfy that theory.
