once my horns get here (fed ex returned them to the hub in florida, said the address was covered or something) I will be all set to go back to inspection, havig fixed everything - except for "modified exhaust." While getting gas at a Sunoco station the attendant told me that they do inspections and that coudl fail because of muffler/tips. I dont knwo how close to the truth this is but its worth a shot... does anyone have a QUIET 3" in muffler and tips that I can borrow?? While I have it you can borrow my magnaflow... just like a temp swap. If not, how about small 2.5" inlet tips???

just goin on a limb here

oh and need reinspection by the 14th or 15th

I don't see any reason how they could fail your exhaust. It's not over the db limit. I'll ask my dad tonight (he has his state inspection license and does inspections at his shop). And no, he won't sticker cars that don't deserve them, so don't ask.

You shouldve posted this a couple weeks ago. I had an exhaust that would fit right up to it, but I gave it away :-(

I would leave your exhaust on and take it to another station. Thats total BS if they fail you for the exhaust tips. The Magnaflow IS 50 State Legal, and obviously had to pass federal testing.

no the sheet simply says "modified exhaust", idk what kinda BS that is but maybe I'll bring it to Wayne this time around, or at least somewhere besides paramus. They didn't notice my back seats and seatbelts were out sine I tossed my t-tops there (it was halloween and hot out), they cant just notice that now and fail me for it can they?

there is NO such reason to fail for "modified exhaust" unless you were missing cats. they CAN fail you for no back seats because the car originally was made with them installed. but they can only fail exhaust for db metering, NOT for any kind of tips at all.

.. i got the info from my mother whos high in the justice dept for NJ

I don't believe that they would fail for no backseats. That would just be .... stupid. Say you got a corvette interior or something.

i agree, thats completely retarded if its true. why would it matter if you had your back seats in or out? as long as ppl arent sitting back there, there should be no reason for them failing you. thats like failing you because the knobs for your A/C arent there, but the car was originally made with them installed

Go to the Lodi inspection station. Quick at any time of day (I went at 3pm, took all of 10 minutes). Dunno if they are lenient or what not, since it was just the Hyundai that went through.

paramus sucks!!!!

they failed my GF in her maxima cuz the rear blinkers were hyper white, totaly understandable, my fault for not changin then before we went, we go back and fail AGAIN for "blue headlights" that were there the first time and passed, so i had a few choice words for the black guy that was doin it n he walked away from me, piece of ****! upon the 3rd trip i turned the whole dam car back to stock n finally passed.

i took the camaro to ridgewood 2 years ago(must make an appointment online) and they loved the camaro, they were askin me questions n all kinds of things and it passed no problem even with the squeakin brake sensors and neon lights underneath!

Justin - sounds good, let me know what he says. And that's cool, even if he was "lenient" this is all in the states comps now so I wouldnt ask him to risk the 5k fine.

John - which station did you go to?

Eric - if she has acess to the books can you find out what the code or w/e is that states that? And the no backseats, I'll just avoid that the same way as last time, by piling a bunch of crap back there lol

Brandon - insurance reasons, a 2-seater has higher insurance than a 4-seater. Also the registation marks it as a 4-seater.

Tonight I stopped by my mechanic (name and location anonymous lol) who passed me 2 years ago with the tint I had on, he said that first off he cant let things slide because of how the info is now in the state's computers, and also because of how strictly the state has been with private stations lately. He basically said to take it back to the state station and give it a try, see what they say once i get my horns in. Said that if I can get a stock muffler and put that on, it may slide by, but that NJ state law says no modified exhaust systems at all, even though the magnaflow is 50 state legal. I realized once I got home thought, if that is the case why the hell is there a dB limit??? Also if I get the 50 state legal paperwork (I will print it out from magnaflow's website and also call tomorrow to request a printed copy) and the state station still says it's no good, maybe I will put a call through to Magnaflow and have their legal department contact the state

Then again maybe I can just go to where John went and have all this crap over and done with.

when you take the car back to reinspect, they are only supposed to address the things that failed, which means they shouldn't even look for anything else wrong with the car. however, something blaringly obvious would surely draw their attention and i don't think they would be able to ignore it.

I keep hearing about this, and I want to write SEMA about this. The exhaust is 50 state legal, and if the car is equiped with all the rest of the emissions legal items, that the car should pass without question. What some minimum wage ******* hears in an enclosed, reinforced concrete walled building should be null and void before it comes out of his or her stupid mouth. The law stands that the exhaust is legal, and this should be taken care of by SEMA and the exhaust companies.

I was thinking of the same thing.

i think the problem is that people are allowing themselves to be steamrolled by said minimum-wage-*******. i would not allow him to dictate to me, and i would do my best to get him fired. he obviously doesn't know his job. they need to test the sound with an electronic device, not his hearing or lack of same. no human ear can tell the difference between decibel levels like a calibrated electronic device can.

i'd ask to see his stupidvisor. if i couldn't get satisfaction, i'd go over their heads until i did. 50 state legal includes NJ. i read one of the kids the riot act over breaking my highbeam switch in the achieva. he said it didn't work when i brought it in and i asked him how he could possibly know what the condition of it was before he touched it. the reason why it broke is because he was playing gorilla-with-the-samsonite-luggage with the stalk.

You can't get a florida license unless youre gonna have a house or apartment off campus. On campus = temporary residence = cant get a license with a temp residence

I just discovered on SEMA's website on NJ legislature:

Issue: Exhaust Noise
Bill: AB 3738
Status: Active
Location:
Description: Requires aftermarket mufflers to be certified to operate at certain noise level; Dept. of Environmental Protection to establish standards
Author: Assemblyman Gordon
Intro Date: 24-Jan-05
Bill Type: Two Year Bill from 2004

that's all they really have listed relating to exhaust.

In terms of magnaflow, this is what's on their website... http://www.magnaflow.com/07techtips/faq/question09.asp

I guess I should print that out?

I always take my cars to Ridgewood. The one time I brought my Firehawk for inspection I was getting collector's reg, so I had to drive to the back of the station. After I parked it, three of the people working there came over and started commenting me on the car, one even asked if she could buy it. They just seem to more laid back at Ridgewood, so maybe try bringing it there.
