View Full Version : How to deafen the sound of a bearing knock?
Yea so... I hear a bunch of rumors in ways to deafen the sound of a bearing knock. See, Im picking up this 4x4 Ford Lariat with a 5speed for real cheap, $650 to be precise (Yea yea its a Ford, but it'll get me to work during the big snowstorms if I have to plow) . It has a 302 and its got a bearing knock. I've heard Mystery Oil will do the trick. I also heard if I use thicker oil, it'll deaden the sound to almost nothing. I just dont want to have to hear one of the many things that is/will be wrong with the truck when I get it. Any suggestions?
thicker oil in the winter might not be a good idea. I'd try Mystery oil first.

dude its a beater, let the knock be and beat the piss out of the thing. cars like that you only put money into it when absolutely necessary. mystery oil if anything and if that doesnt work, curse ford while your driving for building a ****** car and giving you a headache

If it was a chevy motor, I would say to do nothing. I wouldn't have spent $650 on a ford with bad bearings though. I drove my '85 Camaro for 6 months with a od knock. Beat the ever loving crap out of it, and when I sold the car the crank, rod, and block were still intact and functioning normally. there just wasn't a bearing on the #4 connecting rod, so it made a bit of noise.

It COULD be used as a beater, but I never said it was going to be my "beater" ... Im getting the deal cuz the truck has been in the family, 3 owners long to be exact. New clutch and new transfer case alone are worth more than $650 . This truck will be my winter driver, parts hauler and a personal escort of large items.
All I'm asking for is advise on deafening the knock a bit. If I asked "can you please make fun of this Ford for having a knock" or for anybodys personal opinion on the truck as a whole, I wouldve done so already. But thats not the case.

sounds like a beater to me :)
you're not gonna get a definitive answer as to what will fix it so trial and error is all that you can do from here. different things work for different cars so give it a shot and tell us what happens.

Try the Mystery Oil. I've used it before on a ford 302... Works for a while... but you just gotta watch for the piston ripping the cyl wall aprart because you can't hear that It let go.
