These 3 men go to rent a hotel room, it costs $30 so each man gives $10. Later, the clerk realized he over charged them and that the room really costs $25, so he tells the bellhop to give them back $5 and gives him 5 singles. The bellhop trys to figure out how he can split $5 among 3 ppl and then ends up taking 2 for himself and giving each man back $1. The men now end up paying $9 each for the room, so the room ends up costing them $27 dollars, $27, plus the $2 dollars the bellhop took equals $29. where did the last dollar go?

it's all in the wording, which is very misleading.
money paid by the guys each = $9
that is $27 total
the big question: why would you ADD $2 to that $27? The right way is to SUBTRACT $2 from $27 to get $25 PLUS the $5 that was overcharged = 30.

The fact remains that they paid 25 for the room. The 5 dollars and how it was cut up is irrelevant. 25 was paid for the room. There is 5 dollars left. Guy takes 2, the 3 guys split teh 3 dollars. 25+2+3=30.
