Ok, watching the History Channel and wanted to know if anyone knows the diffrence between Nautical miles vs Statute (regular) miles.
No, they are not the same. Why is one different then the other?

12. "Why is a nautical mile longer than a statute mile?"
Answer: A nautical mile is approximately 6076 feet vs. 5280 feet in a statute mile. A nautical mile actually represents one (1) minute of Latitude. Thus, one (1) degree of Latitude equals 60 nautical miles. For example: When you are at 40°10’ North Latitude, you are 2410 nautical miles north of the Equator.

Perhaps one is for the sea and one is for the land/air? I know sea people use nautical miles. pilots use statue miles for flight plans and such. That would be my guess. and i dunno why theres a need for two...

because mapping in the open ocean is based on minutes and seconds of longitude and latitude. a mile that we drive becomes a little useless when you are using a globe as a map instead of maps.google.com :p
if you are going to use a system to scale a map you should use the same system to track movement upon it as well.
