View Full Version : found my new subwoofers...
well, yesterday while shopping for a system for my gf's car, we ended up at 6th ave electronics. Turns out an old friend of mine works in the car stereo department, so we chekc it out. We got a kicker box w/2 12s for 1/2 price and it sounds awesome. but then i asked him about choices of subs for my denali and what was new out. well, JL just came out with their W1 line of subs. i also looked at their w7 12" but i wasnt thrilled, but the w1's...dahm that thing pounds. the single 12" comes in a large ported box that slams hard as hell. i was sold, i'm going back next week to pick it up. Once i get it in my truck, i will probably buy a second one if i can figure out a nice way to arrange them. My friend, the salesman couldnt believe i would consider putting 2 of them in a vehicle. i cant wait, i love bass and i havent gotten to upgrade my car stereo in years, and i havent even heard my ss setup since july. next week i'll finally get to break **** again. :fluffy:

I used to run two 12" W0's in my old bird. Powered by a Kicker ZR240 amp, it was sweeeeet. How can you not be impressed by a W7?? The magnet alone weighs like 30 lbs.

dont get me wrong, its great but its compared to what the w1 was putting out. yes the w1 takes a larger ported box for a single 12" but i have the room in my truck so it doesnt matter. The price i can get the w1 for vs the w7 also makes me go for the w1. Plus i can still run my amp at stereo and have enough power to push it, thats why a second one would also work with my setup. I hate running mono anyway. It'll be powered by an Alpine v12 series F1507 amp.. and a side fact, the w7 i saw was in the JL box which looks like a big vagina, lmao, if you seen the box you know what i mean. haha

what model kickers? L5, L7, X, Comp? square round? silver black?
kickers generally have lower sound quality then JLs but bump MUCH louder. JL audio = mad overrated and mad overpriced. i have www.reaudio.com in my car. i wouldnt buy any other sub. their 200 dollar sub sounds much better and much louder then JLs 500 dollar sub.
something is wrong with the setup there. the w1s are their lowest model and they advertise low output/high sound quality with those subs. their w7 line is supposedly their highest output subs. you cant judge a subwoofer until you actually hear it in a car
the kicker box my gf got is the 12" comp series enclosure. round subs.
Well i did expect the w7 to be better, but it sounded distorted and seemed to have a lot of play and almost over excursion. Maybe that particular sub was just abused alot as a demo. what i may do to pick a sub, is to get my truck all wired and setup first, then try each enclosure, w1 and w7, in my Denali. That way i'll be able to tell a little better what i'd be happy with. I wouldnt mind 2 w7's either.
I like the pounding but I also need the quality that JL does have, i can hear systems any day of the week that hit hard, but 99% of them sounds like crap. I want mine to hit so very hard and have the exacting sound quality and short solid bass not sloppy rumble bass. If you are into stereos youll know what i mean.
hahahaha lmao...i'm a dumbass...
i got the model number wrong of the sub i fell in love with. haha. it wasnt the w1.... I got so confused when looking at them i just remembered that those were the new ones out and I assumed it was the one I wanted. i just spoke to my friend, what i was listenign to and I want to get is the new JL speaker in its enclosure...the JL 13W6, in a ported box, thats the sub that slammed harder than the w7 IMO. sorry for the dumb mixup. lol. but yeah.. anyways..lol

ok there are 2 reasons why the w6s hit harder then the w7s in this instance:
1. the w6 was in a ported box which is always louder then a sealed box as long as its setup correctly.
2. the w6 was a 13.5 and the w7 was only a 12 and the larger the sub the harder and lower it hits
now you may be asking:
1. why would anyone choose a sealed box over a ported one?
2. why would anyone buy a smaller sub if a larger one will be louder and sound better?
here your answers:
1. a ported box is generally more of a boom boom sound while a sealed box creates tighter bass. people that listen to rap and stuff like that like ported boxes cause thats the kind of bass they want. people that listen to rock and very spirited music would rather have a more "agile" subwoofer for the tighter bass. ported boxes are also harder to make because they need to be tuned to a certain frequency and must me larger then sealed boxes which some people (like us fbody guys) dont have space for. i personally prefer sealed boxes which is because i listen to mostly rock.
2. smaller subs are generally less expensive, and require a smaller box. some subs are even too big for a trunk. imagine trying to fit 18" woofers in the hatch of a fbody, not happening.
my opinions on your decision are as follows. there are much better woofers on the market then what you are buying. the JLs are gonna be a waste of money for you if you feel that the kickers sound plenty good for you. from my understanding the kickers generally require a larger box then most subs which shouldnt be a problem since they are going in your denali. thats not to say kicker isnt a good brand. they are excellent by all means and many people will swear by them.
ok i'm tired and going to bed.

the w7 13 is the jl to buy.but be prepared to spend alot of money on an amplifier
they need atleast a 1,200 watt amp to be pushed decently, most ppl run amps with 1000+ rms ratings and 2000+ peak to push a single w7 13.The w7 13's are known to fail at levels above 2,300 watts and shortened life spans with 1800-2200 watts. If u want something that sounds good and can be very loud if u want look into a pair of alpine typr r's, or for something more serious look into one or 2 alpine type x's
the type x is comparable to the w7 and dosent require a massive amplifier or box ,not to mention they are about 1/3rd the price
and stay away from places like bestbuy/circutcity/sixth ave elec, etc they are all way overpriced,ur best bet is going to a real car audio place and stay away from the kenwood/pioneer amps/the old rockford stuff is decent.and never be fooled by peak power ratings.rms ratings are more important then peak.u can buy an amp with a 800 watt peak rating but only have a 200 watt rms, were an amp with a 400 watt rms and 600 peak ratings will blow away the other amp hands down

05-23-2006, 08:51 AM
well i shouldnt say that if ur looking for a lil something extra out of ur stero its fine, but in general all the sony xplod stuff is pretty much garbage, amps that shortout and fry themselves, faulty headunits, the subs are alright nothing really special but dont even think about pushing them at there rated power they will not last long, same with there amps sony 1000 watt amp = a true 300 watts

yeah i think i'm gonna buy a new amp but for the box and subs with a lower price seems like it'd be ok no?

05-23-2006, 06:38 PM
it will be alright,i dont recomend an amp over 400 watts rms(brand name/real amp) with sony subs though
stay away from low end kenwood/pioneer/lightning audio/power acustics etc
btw sony subs new are about 65$'s each at walmart
eh, i wouldnt buy it, i HATE sony with a passion. Xplods are crap. I am still running soundstream subs that i bought from a friends 6 years ago and he bought them as store demos. they have taken a beating but still slam good. I love alpine amps, pioneer head units, but when in a bind i'm always throw back to kenwood amps, not real "quality' but they give a nice thump and they take a beating very well.

those are very good quality low end subs. you can definately get great bass from them. i wouldnt be so anxious to jump on those subs since there really are some great subs for about $100.
Knipps
05-24-2006, 12:00 AM
i'm not anxious to jump on any, don't get me wrong i'd love to get some subs in my car, pump the bass, wake the neighbors :), i just don't have the money right now & there are other things on the car that need to be done first...

if i were u i would save up for a pair of alpine type r's,hell if u use ebay u can get a pair for 200$'s that is as good as alpine gets with subs unless u step upto a type x which then takes u inot the range of the jl audio w7.a nothe rgood nice sub would be an alpine type s or some mtx 8000's or better both of which are fairly cheap and give a breat bang for ur money
another 2 companys to check out would be alumapro <-- i run 2 of these in my rs and can do over 148 db, or cadence, cadence makes awsome subs/amps even there low end subs kill most mid to uper mid level subs, but with a low end price

lol those boxes wont fit into the hatch(and its not killing any db since spl is sound preasure level)(its measured by how well ur subs preasurize the car in a sence ).anyways im sealing the hatch area off with plexiglass its gonna be right behind the amps and seal up against the hatch glass and sides.though the piece will deff be reovable for when i have to throw something back there.prolly only have the pelxi peice in when i goto a soundoff,im debating on puttin 2 more 12's back there in a hatch box,but its even more wight i dont need in the car,im already carrying an extra 300-350 pounds.

i dont know how different the 3rd gens are from the 4th gens but i know my car isnt the worst for SQ. what makes our cars so good for systems is not only the hatch, but the abundance of glass. glass reflects sound waves and really adds to the sound. JBL uses Mike Latchers LS1 firehawk as a SQ competition vehicle. my car is strickly set up for SQ and is therefore no where near as loud as yours. i'm slightly changing my setup this year but i think i found a winning combo.
and yes our cars are amazing for SPL and a little sub can make alot of bass in our hatches

Then you have me.....quasi SQ/SP! Good at both, but not the best at either! One thing I've learned, is you have your hands full trying to achieve both w/o major tuning adjustments! Most SQ cars (f-bodies) don't hit over 143db IMO, but the F-body can be mastered with enough cutting and fabricating. Isn't Mike on his 3rd setup?

ill have to do that, cause im deff looking do do something else with the car,and its gonna be hard to get the roll cage in the car with the enclousre i have now.
the kickers take a really small box so i could fit 4 in less space then im using now,and there really good for spl,the w7's are great for spl but still take a large box.
still undecided though deff wanna take a look at some other brands.alpine type x's,some cadence stuff etc.before i commit to building a new system.then again depending on how fast the car goes on the turbo i may just rip it all out of the car
