View Full Version : GM to resurrect Chevrolet Sting Ray with 2008 model
http://www.leftlanenews.com/wp-images/media/jan2sting_1.jpg
GM is reportedly prepping a third Kappa-platform sports car under the Chevrolet Sting Ray name, according to the February 2006 issue of Motor Trend. Its target? The BMW Z4 and Porsche Cayman. “Like the Corvette, the Sting Ray would transcend GMs old divisional order,” the article explains. If it gets the green light, the Sting Ray will be a well-equipped, high-spec model, priced “far above” the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. which are also built on the Kappa architecture. The car is expected to come with a choice of engines, including a new V6, and possibly the same I4 engine featured in the new Pontiac Solstice GXP, announced this past Sunday. Old news....this was even in the Feb. issue of Motor Trend. It'll be interesting to see what they do with it.
I'm not so sure about the Stingray name on something besides a vette....

Has anyone seen the Stingray concept C5? I thought that looked pretty good. If they could incorporate that into the C6 they might have a hot seller up their with the Z06.

so they are going to bring back the name stingray, which was a corvette line, and put it on a compact platform that has nothing to do with the vette?
i hope not.

Sting Ray was always a name associated with Corvette. And for years that was what a Corvette was, a Sting Ray. How can they go and slap the name on something with not just a V6, but a 4!?! That's wrong.

This has major ties to when GM wanted Corvette to be its own brand. There was gunna be a Corvette, then Camaro, then a smaller sports car. As a Corvette Division, Sting Ray would have been a model.
While I dont agree with the use of the name, I do like the look of the car. Its a combo of Sky and Corvette. I do not agree that there should be a 3rd model sold in the US. I dont know if this would be a good move on Chevy's part.

I agree with using the name, it's associated with the Corvette. BUT, look at the other name GM has ruined over the years...Impala, Monte Carlo, (excuse me, brain freeze)............What are the other's??
Anyway, decent idea, has merit, but...start with ACTUALLY bringing back the camaro, firebird, etc. first, THEN work on the new models. JMO!!

How exactly did GM ruin the MC and Imp? Cause its FWD?

i think the monte carlo name starting falling apart in the 80's when GM treated teh whole g-body platform more like a step child than the top selling line that it was.
left with wimpy engines and terribly over weight, they were not great performance cars off the show room floor. not like the monte carlos of the early 70's that coudl be decked out as either full on luxary models, or street legal race cars, or both.
the new impala i think is just too plain. other than comfortable seats it really hasn't got much more to offer than any other GM fwd mid size. it is a far cry from the full size that it replaced that was a unique model with styling, power, and luxary to appeal to everyone.

How about when they tried to bring back the Nova in the '80's. Yuck.

Ruined to one person, is made better to another.
While I think the GTO is a great vehicle and lives up to the name, many belive that since it doesnt have body on frame, 3x2bbl carbs. and a 4spd manual with a hurst shifter, and of course...hood scoops, that its NOT a GTO.

I did forget the malibu also. What I was talking about was the introduction of cars that used the great names of the past and replaced them with wimpy, FWD, econoboxes!!!! GM is famous for bringing back names of cars that had a great heritage and not being creative enough to not come up with a new name. Granted, I think some (and I mean some) of the cars with names from the past are good, up to date vehicles, but come on, these cars have no personality like those of the past. Look at the Mustang (the new ones), good looking car, good performance, lives up to it's name. Show me a Impala, Monte, Nova(80's), malibu, etc. that lives up to it's namesake of the past, you can't. That's my point. I live and breathe Chevy, but come on, give us something to be happy about. SSR, HHR not really. Camaro, where is it? Firebird, again, not around. GTO, decent, but could be better. The only car that is REAR WHEEL DRIVE that is worth any excitement (I can't believe I'm saying this) is a FORD, ie-MUSTANG. GM, other than the Vette, is catering to the masses with the econoboxes and not to their heritage of performance and being above the competition. Look at Toyota, need I say more?? Will exceed GM as the biggest manufacturer in the US, give me an f-ing break.
I'm done venting now, you may continue

i don't really think the new line of the impala is a bad car, and they are a good luxary value for the dollar. they just don't stand out in traffic like the full size did.

I would bet 100 bucks that the new Impy SS could not only beat the 94-96 Impy SS's but the 60's Impy SS's as well. And I bet it will handle better, and get better gas milage. All with the amazing comforts that are offered in a modern large car.
Malibu was a trim level on the Chevelle.
Where are the people that are crying about the Charger?

i know it will out run, out handle, and out mileage the older car. no question in my mind that technology has brought mid sized front drivers a long way, i woudl jsut like to see GM do something with the styling to make it stand out a bit more.
it is a good looking car, just not the first thing you notice in a line of commuter traffic. the old car was much more noticable.
the new charger is a nice looking car, i just wish someone woudl revive a muscle car name and actually make it a bit more original muscle car attitude though. the charger is supposed to be around 4000lbs.
the principal of the original muscle cars was to have a "light" mid size or compact(for the times) car with all the grunt you could fit under the hood. modern technology has made it so that car companies can create more grunt and still keep the tree huggers happy, but now the cars have gotten even heavier.

It started that way, but from 78-83 it was it's own car.

And exactly did that Malibu do for the name?
I like that style too, and looked for one for a long time, but the car didnt exactly exude any sort of sport or performance, outside of being a good platform for a light car.

I didn't say that it boosted the nameplate, just that it was it's own model back in the day :)
