View Full Version : need to run a 220v line..where 2 start...
Ok, i have my 2 post 9k lb lift, and I am picking up my 60gal. compressor next week, only problem is that I dont have the power source in my garage for either yet. I need to run a 220v line from the main electrical box to my garage. Ive never done home wiring like that before so I really dont know where to start. I assume i'd also need some type of box in the garage too with a breaker and crap. The biggest problem is that the main box is in my cellar all the way on the opposite side of the house(approx. 85ft away) and there isnt really any access(attics or crawlspaces) connecting the cellar and garage. I can try going up the walls and over my living room then back down into the garage, OR go outside and run underground or along the house. I also am not up to date on the code regulations and crap so i guess id have to check into that. If anyone wants to help, i'll pay, i think someone on the board is an electrician but i cant remember right now. I called an electrician a few months back and he said it would cost about $1,000 to run the line, I was like WTF i'll guess try doing it myself, lol. but anyways any info or help will be appreciated. thanks, and hey, i could even pay whoever helps me in cash, used parts, or lift time, haha.

If you have never messed with wiring, you may not want to open up your main box (always hot). Death sucks. Just my $.02.
If you get an electrician to do it, I might suggest the route I took. I had an electrician run a 60 AMP lead to a sub box in the garage (I also had him upgrade the house service to 200 amps; I’m not sure if my idea is ok with 100 amp service). Now I can wire circuits out of that box as I want without snaking wires through the house and I don’t have to open the main box.

i can come take a look at it, try to get a plan going. shouldnt be anything that tough. the most expensive part is the copper iteself; scrap price is about 1.30 a pound
