well the Monte SS ive been building for almost the last 2 years is in the final stages, and my GF has been basically daily driving it for over a month now. Lately i've just been finishing up some odd and end things, but tongiht when I had it out to calibrate the speedo, i noticed one problem..i need a posi, or at least i want one. How it is right now, i can slowly give it gas and the one tire breaks free easily. If i'm at a 10mph roll and I lay into it, it just roasts the tire instantly. My old cars with an open rear never did it that bad. I'm hoping a posi with even it out a little more and along the car to actually hook more. Even at like 25mph if i bunch it, the car goes nowhere and just lights up the one tire, its starting to get a little annoying.

i bought a nearly new 2 series torsen for like $50...gears are ~$180 & install is between free and $450 depending on where you go.

Do you need a 7.5" or 8.5"?

i believe i have the 7.5 rear, the grand nats got the better 8.5 ones. Steve can correct me if i'm wrong, all i know is my current rear is a stock unit from a 88 monte carlo SS w/3.73 gears. I have my old SS rear out back somewhere and the torsen in that may be good, so someday i'll open that up and see if its salvageable.

Yes, that would be a 7.5". Just grab the torsen from your stock rear and swap the ring gear over. Easy stuff....

Not exactly though. G-bodies have 26-spline axles, whereas the '88-up F-bodies have 28-spline axles. Paul, if you use the Torsen outta your SS rear, you'll also have to get new axles.

do f-body axles interchange with g-body? i have some 28 spline 3rd gen axles here if he can use them.

Now that's one I don't know the answer too. I guess we'd have to pull a set sometime and measure them, unless maybe that info is on an axle company's site (like Strange or something).

hmm interesting, so if i buy a posi i need to make sure its for 26 spline axles. good to know.

nope, G-body axles don't match up with 3rd or 4th gen axles (already checked for my brother's 'bu). I forget what the exactly lengths are though.

Paul, just find a thirdgen to rip apart with a posi in it, i think all pre-89 f-bodies should have a 26 spline carrier.

alright, i happened the measure the axles tonight, g body was like 27.75 and 4th gen was about 30", wouldnt a 3rd gen rear be 4" narrower, so each axle should be 2" shorter. if thats correct the 3rd gens should be 28" just about but not, dahm lol... anyways..

now i need 2 posi units, lol. my 94 z28 could use one. I was forced to destroy the oem one to try to get the axle out(which im still working on) the rear bent and bent the axle as well, gettign it wedged in the carrier, only way to get the c clip off was too trash the posi. i tried every other way. but there was so much crap and all in the pumpkim is was probably damaged anyway. for now i'll just run an open rear.
