dude, even the weakest of inspections fails you for visible smoke.

I failed once for a spring sticking out of a seat - and the inspector only noticed because it cut him. :) I didn't even know it was there. (my old 82 TA when I first got it - the inside was a rattrap).

my point is they always find some way to fail me even for a 1/2 inch rip in a wiper blade give me a fin brake but yet i had a cavilier with 365000 miles on it barely running with loud exhaust and they pass it go figure

thats why i will pay the $75 for a private inspection station. they are much more forgiving for certain things, but clearly visable smoke usually stops it right there. Try doing an oil change and adding either STP smoke treatment or Motor Honey. i had a 95 dodge avenger that smoked like crazy(like huge clouds while waiting at a stoplight). i added 2 quats of that stuff(1 qt each) and it stopped 95% of the smoking(small puffs if idling over 10 min). everyone though i swapped the motor from when they saw the previous owner drive it. try that maybe.

dude... LMAO they failed that car again? They mustve dug thru its previous inspection or something... that car did not smoke when i sold it to ya, i made sure i fixed it after it was failed. Double check the smog canister hoses, it mightve slipped off.

Private inspection. They almost always are much more forgiving about things. Lets put it this way. If they pass my **** they will pass anything. ;)

They closed the Jersey City inspection station down because all the employees were taking 100 payoffs. I didn't find out till it was too late!

$100 is the going rate. not too shabby for them. shame they got busted. nothing good ever lasts. if they weren't letting blatant fails through, like no brakes or something else that would be seriously dangerous, then i don't see anything wrong with it. the private inspection stations basically do the same thing.

now, with the inspection sticker being computerized (barcoded) and tied into the test via your VIN, it's getting tougher for the private stations to pull off the slight of hand. i guess they could always attach the sniffer to a new car and say it was attached to yours... not like they are on camera or anyone is watching over their shoulder as they do the test (unlike the public stations).

From what I've been told, you would be rather surprised.

In PA, a certain mechanic I know (shop is closed now) used to cheat cars through emmisions easily. The dyno machine had two tailpipe probes that formed a y before going into the machine. They were supposed to be for cars that had true dual exhaust, so you could get an accurate reading. It was quite simple to stick the second probe in another car that ran much cleaner than the one being inspected, so the average came out as passing.
