ok i posted up on ls1tech for info on making a turbo kit from truck manifolds. not much hot parts left after the manifolds so it should be an easy job for someone who knows what they are doing. some guy jumped in and offered to make me the hot and cold side parts including the truck manifolds for 2k. is it just me or is that alot of money? this does not include the piping for an intercooler or any turbo or turbo related parts, just piping. thoughts?

anyway you slice it a decent/reliable turbo setup will cost you 6-10 grand start to finish...even if it was cheap theres still alot of work that would need to go into making your car run right.

turbo kit = expensive i was originally gonna do one in the next year or so....but instead i think i might end up doing forged head cam engine based off gms new alum 6.2 block they put in the new tahoe but its gonna wait at least a year and a half 2 years cuz theres nots of other stuff i wanna do first... but to answer your question 2k does seem a lil steep

thats what i wanna do. run low boost for the first year until i get used to the extra power. and then up the boost and add a intercooler later

thats awesome info. considering i don't know a damn thing about turbos. my main problem is fabbing up the hot parts, once that problem is solved i think the rest of the install shouldn't be too hard

have you thought about what your doing for a fuel system? BOV? Tuning? your stock injectors probably will have a hard time keeping up with your needs & with a stock timing nearing 20-25* you'll need to adjust that as well as a bunch of other tables more then likely to keep it safe. Isn't there a thing about project undertakings where you take your origonal budget & triple it or something?

yup i already know about all that stuff. i'll probably need a trashed LS1 to use as a mock up for the kit which will also prevent downtime on my car. the fuel system is an upgrade i might as well do anyways. bill more important then the performance upgrade is the importance of the personal challenge. i used to have to take my car to expressway to get my oil changes cause i was too scared to do anything myself. this is a hobby i really want to get into and i would love the satisfaction of being able to say i did something myself and at the same time have something to show for it. maybe the idea will die out like most other phases in life, but for now i would love to do this.

please dont take it as me trying to hold you back from doing it I honestly wish you all the luck...but most people will tell you its usually never as simple as slapping some parts on & crossing your fingers...it rarely has a happy ending that way...even when you take many precautions it can turn out bad. Just giving you a heads up...if you plan on doing the tuning yourself let me know & I'll try and help you get it to where its safe...start looking into getting yourself some 60lb injectors while your at it.

yeah but thats a long ways away. i'm looking around for a cheap set of hot parts first. i'd definately upgrade the fuel pump and injectors first, that i know is important. if i find a broken ls1 to use for a mock-up then we can find out for sure if i can make this idea work

scroll to the bottom, they have mock up engines made outa plastic or some such material......much lighter than messing around with a broken block

thanks mike. i actually cut a deal with a guy on ls1tech to trade my headers and ory for a set of hot parts. i guess this way was easier then fabbing up my own kit and trying to sell my headers. i still wanna do my own kit but i guess this way would save me a huge headache

6 to 10 grand?!?! ouch... if thats the case then i'll jus supercharge my car, since from what i know a SC is cheaper and easier to install :-/ and also im kinda partial to the whine of it :D

honestly...look at the initial cost of even an sts setup...your talking $4500+ tuning so at a minimum your looking at over $5000 in most cases for the base setup...and who's to say that wont blow up a stock motor after a couple of months. Even blowers you really should be spending upwards of $5000 from start to finish if you want a relyable car.

so jake, where is the turbo gonna mount? In front of the motor? If it mounts there, wont there be issues with radiator clearance? I'm just guessing there would be but I could be wrong, I havent spent a lot of time under the hood of LS1 cars.

ian the turbo kit i bought mounts the turbo slightly in front of the motor on the passenger side of the engine bay where the alternator is. i am going to have to relocate my alternator higher up in the engine bay in order to mount the turbo but i will be able to keep my AC. as for building up the stock motor i am gonna run low boost until i get the hang of the extra power because i have never really driven a car with that much power, i think my motor can handle low boost so i'm not worried about that. i figure by the time i am ready to up the boost i will have saved up enough for some new internals and some truck heads.

ps- i did a search on ls1tech and a guy running a stock ls1 threw 11psi to the stock motor for a dyno run and did 700+ to the wheels. i am hoping for 500+ to the rear wheels which is looking quite promising :)
