I got 4.10's in my formula... i dont like em... im putting my stocker 3.42's back in... they took alot off top end away.... and gas miliage is bad... but my car is a bat outa hell off the line with em... but my 4th gear tops out like 95... it should be at least 100+ so im goin back stock.... they are fun tho

Did you have the tune adjusted to compensate for the gears?

Not as bad as you would think. Around town, milage should actually improve, as the engine doesn't have to do as much work to get the car moving. You will lose some milage on the highway though.

by his name it sounds like he might have a 93 which would be pre computer controlled tranny so little or no computer work should've had to be done.

Right....I just figured that if he's topping out at 95 MPH with 4.10s, something is wrong. Car should still be pulling hard there.

the thing is with 4.10's the car would be at the top of 3rd in an auto at like 105mph in street tires so it very well feel like its running out of steam at that point. Craig runs a slightly larger tire then stock so he could probably run 4.10's out to 110mph...a stock size tire might only be 25.5 which would top out before his...again depends on the powerband and as we know lt1's make peak tq very low.

4.11's with a TH400 + Gear Vendor overdrive. 132mph @7,000rpm in 3rd gear, with 28" slicks.
Not so great on the street though.... with 25.65" street tires, it was turning almost 4,000rpm at 70mph, until I added the GV.

with a 26inch tall tire 6000rpm in 3rd(auto)/4th(5/6spd) is 117mph.
if you lost that much top end with the gears you have a larger problem someplace else. most of the time when you switch to a numerically higher gear your mileage will only change slightly if you continue to drive the same way. if you fall in love with your new found aceleration, that is a different story.

On stock 16"s with 4.10's you should top at 5700rpm@40mph, 60mph, 85mph, 106mph, 143mph and 212mph (given enough horsies under the hood (1st-6th)
And I actually expect an increase on the highway, right now I still cant even use 6th gear, i stay in 5th, its boggy as hell around 70 in 6th, its too slow and if you go faster then 70 around here your askin for a ticket... 4.10's will allow me to cruise in 6th probably at a lower rpm then 5th, and still higher then old 6th which wont put as much stress on the tranny and rear... in theory atleast :)
but i drive on the highway maybe...1ce a month? :D
i'll keep ya up to date, and post some numbers. i kept a record of two runs on stock gears 0-60, and i'll do the same with 4.10's see how the rpm/speed/time changed.

i ripped my 4.10s apart coming out the whole at the strip and put some 3.42s back in and rip it off the line every time

What mods do you have on your car? were you running slicks? what brand gears where they?

numerically higher gear = more torque multiplication
more torque multiplication = more 7.5inch 10bolt case distortion
7.5 inch case distortion + excess power + traction = BOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!!!

it si one of those things that i see a lot on different sites. people think the problem with the 7.5inch rear is the carrier or the gears. fact is that the case was designed to be functional and reduce materials useage. that is why GM went from 8.5inch rears to 7.5inch.
that left a case that didn't ahve all teh material need abover the bearings to hold the carrier correctly when power is applied. this can be solved to a large degree by welding the tubes to the center section(GM presses them in and then puts 2 tiny tack welds on each tube) and using a cover that has cap supports built into it.
