Hey guys I just dropped a junkyard T5 in my 87 GTA and it actually worked. Im pretty exited about that because i havent had second or fourth in a few months. But i have a question for you guys.

First off, i bought the car from a guy who said it was a 350, but GTAs only came with 350s and auto, it has a 5 speed. The vin number says its an L98 which is a 305. but i dont know if its the original block, its still a tuned port and the heads are aluminum. i thought the 305s had cast iron heads.

Anyway it feels preety quick, faster than a 305TPI with a 700r4 and a crap load faster than my old TBI. I know the only way to see what it can do is to take it down to englishtown, but id like to get an idea of what it will do in the 1/4 before i go down there: heres the setup.....

305/350????
TPI
Aluminum Heads
Headers to 3inch pipe w/ gutted cat and a flowmaster muffler.
Borg Warner 5 speed
and 3.45 9bolt posi rear end.

think i can hit mid 14s???

Welcome to the club!

L98 is a 350, but no regular 3rd gen ever came with aluminum heads. Only the vette L98s had aluminum heads. What is the 8th digit of the VIN?

Sounds to me like you have a very un-orignal car, but that could be a good thing.

They never mated the 350 upto a 5sp.
Fbody never got alumn. heads

When I get my TA together LMK and we can do a few runs on the highways.
Im good for Mid to Low 14s

to find out what size motor you got, try seeing if you can look at the block right behind the drivers head, like right above where the bellhousing bolts. it will say 5.0L or 5.7L.

It appears the motor may have been swapped, so i wouldnt be surprised if it was also converted to a 5spd. To tell what the car was, the 8th digit of the vin would be "f" for a 305tpi and "8" for a 350 tpi. If it is "8", then the car was converted to 5spd since like Koll said, 3rd gens never came with a 350/T5 combo.

In RPO's, LB9 is a 305 and L98 is a 350. GTA's did come with 3 possible engine combos as far as I know.... 305tpi/auto, 305tpi/manual, and 350tpi/auto.

Yeah sorry i didnt check my post i meant LB9 we think it might be an L98. but it has the 3.45 option and it was definately a factory 5 speed. thats the only thing we know for sure, besides the fact that the heads are aluminum. and are 5.0 and 5.7 valve covers interchangeable?

All 87+ centerbolt valve covers are interchangable, with the exception of LSx motors.

Why not take the car to the club dyno day in March and get some numbers on HP and torque.

You can then play with the numbers on the link below.

BTW, the price for the dyno day is a great deal!
