hey guys, i was thinking of converting my 305 tbi to a 350 tpi with some other mods. i Would like to know what kind of numbers you guys are puting out(power, torque and 1/4) on stock and mod cars. please tell what you have done to it if not stock and tell if it is (Realy)street leagel. Im would like to keep mine as a daily driver, so am tring to see were i can go with this. also what do you guys suggest. it would be a ground up rebuild so options are still avalible to me. thanks

With a full bolt-on L98, and gearing, and some minor weight reduction, you can see high to mid 14's, maybe lower. Go check out TGO's TPI Section (http://www.thirdgen.org) where you will find everything, anything, and any questions you have, and use the "Search" at the top of the forums. They are alot better help over there.

I fixed your quote. :) If you've got a full-bolt-on L98 running mid 14's, it's only running on 6 cylinders. I've run a 15.0 @ 90mph on a wheel-spinning 2.6 second 60' with my cammed TPI 305 (aka LB9). A cammed 350 TPI (L98 ) car should have no trouble knocking off mid-low 13s, and still be completely driveable and emissions-legal. Add in some good heads, a better flowing intake (like a Stealthram) and you'll be cooking!

I have new stock heads, flowtech shorty headers, hi-flo cat, magnaflow cat-back, TB coolant bypass (probably not much of a difference), a.i.r. tube delete (again, probably no real gain..it was more of a convenience thing), smog pump delete (better throttle response), MSD blaster coil, MSD 8mm wires. Thats pretty much it as far as power mods. I made 210 rwhp and 300 rwtq. Those flowtechs are ****** and I'm willing to bet that they held back some hp, not only because of their design and size, but because I had/have leaks. For a DD, I'd go with hooker super comp shorties..as for me, I'm going with super comp LT's as soon as I get some cash. I didn't run the 1/4 yet, but I have a few mods that will help out my time when I do run... I put in a 3.42 posi rear to replace my old 2.77's and I also have SFC's, LCA's and LCA relocation brackets that I still need to install. My friend Steve has an 89 GTA with the 350 TPI. He has edelbrock TES shorty headers, flowmaster cat-back, hypertech chip, MSD ignition box, boxed LCA's, 3.27 posi rear, and roller rockers. He ran a best of 13.7 in the 1/4

forgot to mention..Steve's car is fully street legal, mine would be if it weren't for leaks and my uncertainty with the hi-flo cat that is on there. Once I get collectors insurance/registration and the LT headers, I'm ditching the cat.

Cammed is not bolt on....and for the kind of money re-doing a tired 350 and then getting a stealth ram, etc, etc it is cheaper to get a crate engine. If you get a low mileage L98 and are happy with just the cam swap then you are golden. If you are planning on rebuilding it or buying heads etc etc get a crate engine.

**BTW GM HO 350, 330HP, 350Ft LBS, $2,800, only downside it has vortec heads**

true, but if you have the engine out of the car, its not too difficult to throw in a different cam before you drop it in.

That's what I am saying, if ther L98 is good enough to use as is that is an easy swap but you still have to take off the intake and such.

whats wrong with vortec heads? 20-40hp increase over earlier stock heads. plus they can still be ported and flow better.

Different bolt pattern then the TPI, nothing performance wise wrong with them. They are awesome heads. Just need a different intake manifold.

oh, yea I know about needing a different intake...by you saying its a downside I thought you meant that the head itself wasn't good. I gotcha now

Well, if you're in the 11s on a T5, I won't be as worried about mine after I swap in the 355. Whew!
