View Full Version : Front Plates....on or off?

I've noticed very few f-bodies in NJ without front plates. I recently took mine off my z28 and WS6 and i haven't been bothered at all. I must say, the front of the cars look A LOT better without the plates. I know that in NJ you get a $42 ticket for not having one, but i think the look is worth the risk. (I've been pulled over once so far, and the cop didn't mention it)

Anyone else agree?

I agree, had mine off for a while but then figured my car's no show car and I've got enough other stuff to get pulled over for (any reason's a good one in north jersey) so put it back on.

F-bodies definitely look better without front plates but it isn't worth it IMO. I got pulled over three times and got a ticket each time before I finally decided to put it back on.

Most of the tickets I've gotten have been in Cranbury. What's up with that? They're pretty heartless. I had my plate in the windshield and they still gave me a ticket every time.

my plates are riged onto my grill with them twist things that cam on loafs of bread, so I can take them off in seconds.. I need a whole new plate set up and its not worth the money for something i dont need..I just need some zip ties and ill be set!

Believe it or not, zip ties are illegal also. Plates have to be attached by a metal bolt. I only know this because, you guessed it, I got pulled over for it.:rollseye:

It really depends on the cop. I had one of my rear plate bolt holes on my pickup strung up with a zip tie and they didn't mention it when I went to get it inspected. The jack-hole that gave me a ticket for it while driving my camaro gave me three at once:
1)expired inspection sticker
2)improper display of plates
3)improper mounting of plates
It's probably one of those things where they can't stop you for it but if they already got you and they wanna stick it to you...well there you go.

cranbury cops are mostly ******** its a well known fact apperently.... i did however have one let me go doing 86 in a 55.... mostly because i had 2 fop cards and 2 pba cards with me but he also has a 95 z28 so we started talking cars

You live in Jersey. The front plate is required. There are bigger things to fight about.

i agree the car looks better without the front plate and 42 bucks isnt that much to pay. However after it becomes 84, 126, 168 thats kinda alot for stupid lisence plate. I had the same problem when i had my wondows tinted, 45 bucks wasnt much. However when i got pulled over twice in 3 days by the same cop and got two tickets i took it off.

I haven't had a plate mounted in the front for almost 2 years now. Ive only gotten one ticket for it and one verbal warning. The one ticket was much better then getting a gathering on a rest-stop/street-racing ticket I could have got! Right now its not even in the front window! (*knock on wood*)

Right now its mounted on a home made frame that I keep in the back seat. My excuse is "I was taking photos of the car so I removed the front plate, and due to the cold weather I haven't had a chance to re-mount it ;-)

Yea i don't think i'm ever gonna put the front plates back on. I guess i'm just lucky enough to have no cops around here care. I have a completely custom 88 Monte Carlo SS i almost never drive, and thats how i've gotten my only front plate ticket. I drive my 95 z28 everyday and NEVER get bothered. Go figure how that works eh? My WS6 is getting some paint/bodywork done, and i bought the front insert with the T/A emblem on it, front plate won't be going back on that one either. And keeping the plate in your car doesn't work, i tried that when i got pulled over with my SS.

i got a ticket for not having it on, while the car was parked at 7-11 lol, so instead of that ugly braket, i cut the plate to the size of where it says CAMARO on the grille, drilled holes in it and bent it to fit the crease in the middle and screwed it on, they didnt say anything with about an inch cut off each side at inspection:) but i failed emmisions and cuz my shift indicator doesnt move!

jon's dad has a motorized thing for the front plate on his plymouth i think. i'm actually thinking about mounting it on my air dam so when the cops can see it when i pull the front tires coming out of a toll booth

you need to beware and ask your insurance company about it first. long story short: i had mine off for over a year and then all of a sudden i was pulled over twice in one week. got off the first time, not the second. got the 42 dollar ticket, paid it, and when i had to renew my car insurance shortly thereafter, they knew about it and it hurt my premium! i asked why and they said thats how it is, its considered a moving violation, just like driving without registration, plates, inspection, license etc. so i got beat and now they are on. yes 42 bucks aint much but itll get you in the back end.

i have mine on but then again i dont have the front "cap" for the bumper so it would look just as bad.

Based on growing up at the beach, where local cops have nothing to do, here is the big problem with no plates, bad inspection stickers, tint, lights out, etc. It is a reason to get you pulled over (what do they call it, probable cause?). If you have nothing to hide or whatever, then roll the dice. But if your goofy friend has something in his pocket that might not be legal, or you had ½ a beer at dinner, look out. You are sending out the welcome mat. And yes, your friend (or his friend who came along for the ride) the one with the 1/8th that you didn’t even know about, is the one that will screw you in a second, dumping it out on your floor or under the seat.

I never liked having conversations with the local boys, at least ones I didn’t initiate. So I learned to stop inviting them over. And I never liked stupid tickets that cost me money.

I’m rolling the dice with the 77, but I’m older, I have QQ plates, and I have a clean license, so I think I could talk my way out of a ticket. ‘Sorry sir, I am trying to find the right bracket – not easy to get for a 30 year old car’.

Just a thought.

You are absolutely 100% right though about rolling the dice.

I see it like this:
1) I have absolutely nothing to hide
2) If your not doing anything wrong I.E obeying the rules tint is considered a secondary offence they need to get you on something else.
3) I have a perfect driving record
4) I dont drive my car alot, I stay REALLY local so I know the area.
My car only goes to:
A) My Driveway
B) Day Job
C) School (one class at night)
D) Hollister @ The mall (Night Job)
E) Friday nights with the North Crew
F) My Girlfriends house a town over (when shes home from school)

My car spends 75% of its time at A & B.

Funny thing, my car is originally an out of state car, and i refuse to drill the ****ing holes in my bumper...so its in my windshield, went through inspection with it like that yesterday with no problem...i plan on keeping the damn thing off too...not drilling any holes in my car, like my rear bumber, the people i bought the car from, decided to drill two holes in it, and then rivet an aluminum name plate there, i want to kill those bastards....

I dunno man, I think the pre 91-92 front GFX are made that way. I had a 92 RS before the iroc and its a totally different design and actually comes down lower than the pre 91-92 models. The 89 also has less miles than the 92 did. Got any pics of your 91-92 front GFX that work? I'm still debating whether or not to get just the front and leave the stock GFX on the rest, or to convert all of them, or to just leave it the way it is.

Yeah, it's not worth the risk of getting a stupid ticket. It's just an invitation to get pulled over and if the cop is having a bad day you could be in for some fun. No front plate, expired inspection, too dark of tint, all dumb things to get tickets for. And with most of you guys being under 25 it could really hurt on your insurance too.

I think it really depends on the cop. Last summer I was out in the Firehawk and the plate off. I went through 3 towns and passed a cop in each town and nothing happened.

Then this past weekend I was out in my Dad's new GTO. He didn't get the front plate mounted on it because they drill three holes in the front of the car. I was driving down a long road in Franklin Lakes, and a cop was parked waiting for speeders on the other side. So naturally I'm driving very slow and he's got all the time in the world to look at the front of the car. Drove by him, nothing happened. My dad's friend is a retired cop...I should have him ask him.

Most of the tickets I've gotten have been in Cranbury. What's up with that? They're pretty heartless. I had my plate in the windshield and they still gave me a ticket every time.

My theory... if they see it in your windshield, they see your not following rules and choose not to follow or abide by them, but thats just my theory. If I were to have no plate on my front bumper, it wouldnt be put anywhere else.

Ive been pulled over twice in three days for it after i installed my billit grill, and since i know most of the cops in my town, they "warned" me, basically almost saying "Its all fine and dandy here, but other towns will ticket you" kinda deal. So whatever, I rigged something up that can be removed no less than 5 minutes when i go to carshows/cruise nights .

As witnessed in Clinton Twp. They pull speeders over on an off ramp from 78.

My advice is to keep your plate in the back with two rusty broken bolts. Then if you get pulled over, tell him it just fell off and you are going home to put it back on.

if you dont have the plate on the bumper DONT put it in your window, that just shows that you know it needs to be displayed and blatantly dont care...

do as alex mentioned and have it in the back seat so you have the "took it off to clean/photograph/got hit/etc." excuse

one time i was with a bunch of buddies going down the pine barrens on quads/4x4's....the cop waited till we pulled into the woods then followed us and pulled me over (probably the only street legal truck amung us) asked where my front plate was and i proceded to freak out running down the trail looking for it.... told him it was there till i hit the bumpy trails and he believed it
