i just got a Diamond Stealth 9250 graphics card for a killer price, only problem is it's an AGP version.
my comp has 3 PCI ports and a spot for an AGP port, but no port (to the right in the pics, just next to the open PCI port).

soooo.....where can i pick up an AGP port to put in that slot and do i need to solder it onto the board?

Billy,
IMO, you're hosed. Technically you could solder an AGP port on there, but then you'd have to get a BIOS to recognize it... and chances are it would be very difficult to get the port on in the first place.

return the card or buy a new motherboard
turbo96z28
03-21-2006, 10:56 PM
from what i heard, the comp should recognize the port if it's installed (don't know if it's true or not). i'm not afraid to pull the board out and solder the port on if that's the case.
can't return the card.
and i might be getting a new PC around December, don't know yet, so i'm not up for swapping out boards unless i'm sure i'm keeping it.

ive never heard of soldering a port onto the board, that could be kinda dangerous. although i have 2 motherboards i could sell you, the newer one needs a reflashed BIOS from Asus though. both are Asus boards. $40 for either board. the one that needs the BIOS is a P4C800-E Deluxe and the other one is a P4G8X Deluxe. A new bios chip only costs $5.

*UPDATE*
i got recommended to a local PC shop that might be able to help.
i'm gonna go up there tomorrow afternoon and see what he says.

Either way it's gonna be a pain. You can physically solder the AGP slot onto the board, but it has to be done perfectly or you can kill the entire board. You would prolly have to get a BIOS chip from the version of that motherboard that came with AGP support, and then install it and flash it to the latest version.
Other option would be to pick up a cheap motherboard with AGP, and use that. Only problem with that is, your current Windows setup might not accept the new board, and you may have to reinstall Windows over top of itself to get the system to run afterwards. This won't cause you to lose any data, you'll just have to update some preferences, as not all of them are retained.
That card looks pretty good, even though I'm partial to Nvidia's chipsets. Personally, I would just swap to another board. I don't have any P4/Celeron boards laying around, otherwise I would sell one to you cheap.

It's a Presario 6350US with the stock board, P4 2.4.
Tru2Chevy
03-22-2006, 12:09 PM
It's an ASUS P4G533-LA board. Used in many HPs and Compaqs. I did a google search, but I couldn't find a version of that board with AGP support. I'm sure there is one though. Hmm...I'll look at Asus' website to see if they still list it.

im here im here, looks alright though its micro atx which means its alot smaller then the other boards, which also means that it might not bolt up in your case correctly :-/ i still recommend you check out my board Asus P4G8X Deluxe (http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=Mzk4) i'll sell it to you for $35 (cant beat that), i has more features then the board your looking at and there is nothing wrong with it, works perfectly. the only thing is it doesnt support 800mhz FSB. time to take a shower now and drop my car off at kaseys...

Brando56894
03-23-2006, 01:16 PM
 newer P4 processors have whats called 800mhz Front Side Bus, it forget what it actually is, but i do remember that the speed of the processor depends on it. older P4 processors have a 533mhz Front Side Bus. Hence a new processor (one with an 800mhz FSB) wont work with this board. when you boot up your computer one of the first things that it will say is either "533mhz FSB" or "800mhz FSB" (im pretty sure i never pay attention to the POST screen anymore...)
turbo96z28
03-23-2006, 01:29 PM
i'll have to re-boot to make sure, but i think it's 533mhz.
it's a P4 2.4GHz
and if i search it on newegg, this is the only one that comes up

i have all the stuff for it and anything extra you might need, i have a brown box that i keep all my cables an miscellaneous **** in. if your processor is a 2.4 then it will definately work, cuz thats what i was using for the longest time until i got my 3.06 this christmas :w00t:

You should prolly check on that.

ok, now i got a question, i basically gave up tryign to network my 2 pcs and i dont feel like buyign a new modem just to get my picture files off my old comp...so... im gonna move all the files i want onto 1 hard drive and pull that and put the whole drive into my current computer. Sounds good? i hope so. anyways.
My old comp has 3 hard drives, C, D, and E.
C is the main with a capacity of 1.99GB(385MB free)
D is the secondary with a capacity of 1.52GB(1.44GB free)
E is the last one with a capacity of 494MB(494MB free)
since i wanna keep the comp semifunctional after i yank the hard drive, i wont take C drive... i was thnking of using D. which most of my files are already on. good choice? lol
Once i have all the files moved, and i open the case...how do i knows which drive is which? lol, and once i find it and remove it, how do i install it in my surrent computer? i need some assistance, lol.

For starters, do you know for sure that there are physically three hard drives inside the computer? It's easy to divide one physical drive so that it acts as many seperate drives.
I would open the computer first and verify the existance of three drives. If there are three, then read the labels on each - most list the size (in MB or GB) of the storage capacity. That will tell you which drive is which. If there are three drives (or two for that matter), then your idea will work fine. Just make sure that you check the jumper settings of ALL of your drives anytime you add or remove a drive from a box. Jumper settings should also be on the label of each drive.
- Justin
haha, see im glad i asked, i opened it and only see 1 Hard drive(POS), shows i never looked, lol. Well anyway, i just moved all the files i wanted to the 1 part of the HD then. Myabe itll be easier to find them later on. Where do the jumper setting come into play? ive never really swapped parts other than modems and game/video cards. I also have another hard drive from the comp i took apart earlier today, is it possible to use that as well, and then truly have 2 or 3 functioning hard drives? i say 2 beacuse once i get the files i need of the one, i wanna put ti back in the old comp to keep it functioning to some extent.

I would just take the hard drive out of the old one, drop it in the new one long enough to copy over the pics, and then put it back in the old machine.
This isn't exactly what you are doing, but it will prolly help: http://www.mysuperpc.com/hdu/jumper_pins.shtml

i copied all my files onto my external before i put my USB 2.0 card in and it took about two hours to copy about 67 gigs worth of files
hmm, ok, seems simple enough, but just to be safe, i tried putting an even older hard drive i pulled form a comp today into my old dell, so far so good, its booting up now. if that goes well and i can grab files of there, then ill fell confident doign the swap into my good comp

YOu should just be able to go into my computer and see the new drive. If not, you need to reboot and try clicking the Del, Esc, F2 buttons. It depends on the BIOS how to get into it. And you have to click whatever button before it starts listing drives as it's booting (I normally just start repeatedly hitting the button once it's started to reboot).

slave on top, master on bottom, the connector end is in the master the connector inline goes to the slave.

ok, its a no-show in "my computer" so i went into the BIOS, set it like it explains, auto for an IDE drive, in primary drive 1(primary drive 0 is the master). i booted it up, still no new drive in "my computer". I went back to BIOS, its listed fine there in the spot and all its info was filled in... but now stil;l noi new drive in "my computer".... ugh i give up for tonight, ill pay someone to do ti for me... wheres a metal fork, im gonna go poke the motherboard, lol (j/k)

smokingss do u have broadband if so i can give u access to my highspeed ftp server (622MB/s)to upload the **** u want to xfer to ur other comp, just upload it and then dl it to the other comp
no, i have no internet connection whatsoever from that comp. a lightning storm last summer fried my modem and i decided just to buy a new compueter in stead since that dell was from '98. but now i have picture files i want off it and i tried using the ethernet cards to netwrok but that didnt happen so now im tryign to swap hard drives..but that is a whole nother mess... one day ill figure soemthign out maybe
interesting, when i enabl;e the drive in bios, in my computer i loose "drives" d and e (the other divided sections of the master hard drive C) and they cant be found, and there is still no slave that shows up, if i remove the slave from bios, and just have the master, i get drives C D and E fine... wtf... i give up for tonight

ok set up the xp machine for internet connection sharing, this will have the xp computer automatically set an ip address to the windows 98 computer. once the xp machine is set up, plug in the network cables to the switch and reboot the 98 machine, when it starts goto run
and type cmd. in the box that pops up type ipconfig /release, when that finishes type ipconfig /renew.

hey paul that hdd you just put in might not be formatted, if you have XP on that computer right click on the start button then click properties, then customize
if your using the newer version of the start menu (the top bullet) go to the advanced tab and all the way at the bottom select select the bullet next to "display on the all programs menu" under admin tools
if your using the older start menu (the bottom bullet) put a check next to "display admin tools"
after thats done go to start -> programs -> admin tools and select computer management. under the storage tree click Disk management and see if the other harddrive shows up in there, you should see two separate disks with either fat32 or NTFS partitions, if not format the one with fat32 that doesnt show up.
time for me to get some sleep since i have to be up at 5 am, talk to you guys later, ill definately have a lot of pics to share for those that wanna see them :D damn i need to get me one of these new fangled digital cameras (im using my moms for the time being)

No, what Brando is saying is the same thing I was thinking as soon as he said the new hdd didn't show in My Computer. The other drive that he just installed isn't formatted, so Windows won't recognize it.
You can't format the drive from within Windows 98, you need a boot disk that has the FDisk program on it.
You know what would make this really easy?
Take the one hard drive that has all of your old pictures on it out of the old computer temporarily. Rejumper it to slave, and install it in the newer computer. Copy pictures from the old hard drive to the hard drive that is in your new computer. Then shut down, reinstall old hard drive into old computer, and you'll be all set. :)
- Justin
ok.. lemme explain, lol, i had 3 computers, a HP, a dell and an emachince.
The emachine is my current good one, the dell has the picture files, the HP is just another one i stripped apart yesterday. Before trying to put anything into my eMachine, i wanted to see how the process would work, so i put the HP hard drive in the Dell. Thats where i having issues. Once i see all how that works, then i was going to put the HD from the dell into the emachince and copy my files off it, then return the HD to the dell. But right now, i'm having trouble finding the HP HD on the dell. but thats not a big deal, but i was just trying to practice with doign that swap first.
Tru2Chevy
03-24-2006, 09:10 AM
I think you'll be fine swapping the Dell hdd into the eMachine. XP is far more advanced than 98, it should have no problem detecting the drive as long as your jumper settings are correct.
