Found an interesting article on street racing in Philly. Seems like Delaware Ave is a pretty big spot. Anyone ever cruise there? Of course I don't dare street race. It is illegal. Just curious, of course.

good read... publicism like this is what cracks down on stuff like that. i'd rather those punks take it to the track then kill a bystander on the street.
i like how the red camaro wins at the end. :w00t:

there are 4 or 5 spots around th ecity that havfe been operating at least since the 70's. the better spots were always out in the northeast, less populated, and down by the airport where there is mostly commercial property.
it was all well and good when i was a dumb ass kid and thought i was invinceable. the reality is that there are several tracks within a very short drive of the city and no real reason to risk it all in the streets.

lol
you gotta understand it is jsut a philly thing. 2 things you can count on in the city.
1: stupid is contagious
2: success during the regular season is just setting up a bigger failure in the playoffs.

From the article,
"The city should just give us one street and let us race on it. That way they can regulate it, and maybe even make a little money," Chris says.
Uhh.....? Track anyone?

lets see,
philly to atco = about 30mins
philly to etown = 1hr 45mins
philly to cecil = 1hr at most
philly to maple grove = 45mins
time spent driving around philly looking for a race and hoping to not get arrested 5-6 hours. wouldn't it jsut easier easier and save gas to meet up at the track and race?
to all the street racers out there who wanna try to pass off that **** about having balls and "real men" doing it in the street, A REAL MAN IS WILLING TO PUT IT ON THE LINE HEADS UP AND PUT THE NUMBER ON THE BOARD!!![/rant]

I noticed that article was a few years old. Do people still race there? I don't mind getting em lined up somewhere out in the country with nothing around, but in the middle of a major city is just crazy.

it still happens there and elsewhere. like tim said, several spots have been bumping since at least the '70s (when i was last there  ).
"I would be in favor of anything, anything that would put a stop to this," he declares, "because right now all we can do is issue tickets. We’ve already had one guy killed last summer racing his motorcycle, and that didn’t stop them. Someday, there’s going to be a huge, horrible tragedy."
remember the article i posted about route 37 from the parkway to seaside being the most dangerous road in Ocean County? that doesn't stop them. there are at least 5 deaths per year, but it just couldn't happen to them - they are so much better at driving than the schmucks who get killed doing exactly the same thing, thinking exactly the same thing that they do every night of the week during the summer months. it doesn't matter how many tickets are issued (those who are real serious make enough cash to laugh at the tickets) or how many people are killed or how loudly we scream, "take it to the track". stupid is contagious is absolutely correct, but it's not central to philly - it's all over.

There's a friend I have with a very fast "street" car, this is a conversation he had with a ricer:
Friend: "So I hear your car is pretty fast."
Ricer: "hell yes it is!"
Friend: "What's say we go to the track sometime?"
Ricer: "No I don't want anyone to know my time, I only race on the streets"
Friend: "That's ok, we'll put N/T on our windows, it won't display our time."
Ricer: "What do you have?"
Friend: "It's a camaro, it's a street car. What's say we race for 5 or 10... THOUSAND"
Ricer: ::****s pants::
I love how these guys are always so fast to race on the streets, but when you challange 90% of them to a heads up race on a track, they always seem to loose their balls.
