Home electrical question..220v...(again)

OK so i still havent done anything about running a 220v line to my garage yet. but today i made an interesting discovery. I was cleaning out a lot of overgrown shrubs and plants behind my main garage. Back there, there is also the one central air conditioning unit for one side of the house. I honestly forgot that was back there, it was so covered, anyways, while trimming the one shrub there, i noticed there is a large electrical box (approx 8"x10") right on the outside of the garage back wall, which feeds the a/c unit. Now my question is.. does that feed possibly 220v? or is that still basic 120v? If it is 220v, can i use that box to feed a new seperate 220v fuse box right inside the garage on the other side of the wall and then feed 220v from that to the A/C unit with a new breaker? anyone?

If that is a 220v line going to the box, then you should be able to do just that.

i just looked on the a/c unit, theres a tag on it with all the specs and it says "Voltage 208-230" so now im 99.9% positive it is a 220v line right there. now i gotta see whats involved to set up a new fuse box. At least this save me alot of trouble with trying to run a new line, an electrician wanted 1,000+. and no i can finally install my lift and get my air compressor and i'll be able to use them. :w00t:

That AC unit might need to be on its own circuit. Do we have any electricians around here?

even if the a/c is 220v, i wouldnt use that line. unless you r not using that a/c anymore. the wire and braker are not gonna be able to take the extra load from the lift etc. thats how house fires start. lol
