I AM SO HAPPY.
My insurance was nearly cut in half. I just got the renewal forms today. Granted, I only have liability, but the first year I was paying over 1500, then the second year over 1600, the third went back down to 1500, and then the fourth year is..... *drumroll, please*
813 and 91 cents. A year. Beautiful. Dirt Cheap for me, i think.

I'm on my own insurance. Not my mothers. Totally separate company, and the car title is in my name. One day, you will learn how hard it is.

That's how much my brother pays for the same car. It's only because you're a guy. Doesn't that suck? Yeah. It sucks.

I did already, I went from First Trenton, paying $4850 /per/ 9 months (3 month rest period) to Geico, paying only $1300 /per/ 6 month ... that was a HUGE savings itself, but wtf?!
my denali is 1200 for full coverage, and any additional car is 280 for liability only for the year.

Consider yourself lucky. I never had my parents pay for my insurance. I had to get a job when I was 16 just so I could build up enough money to pay for it when I started driving at 17. You're lucky you even have a car at the age you are that is already insured. But seriously, if you don't start paying for it yourself sooner, you might have a tough time adjusting when you get older and move out of your parents house and you're not on mom's insurance anymore. Your car is only 700 bucks because it's not your mom's primary driving car. When peopel have several cars under the same insurance, one is listed as the primary car, and the rest can be added on at a much cheaper cost per year. Hence, your car is not your mother's primary car, therefore it has been added on to her insurance at the low cost of 700 bucks a year. Now, when you start driving, because the car is not in your name, you are what they call "the secondary". You don't own it, your mom does, which would make your mom "the primary" driver. Now because you're young and a new driver with a sports car, and a male, they will most likely tack on more money to the cost of your insurance, because she basically added another driver (that's you) to the car. And then it wouldn't be 700 bucks anymore. Ah, but you're not driving it yet, so thats why it's cheap.
And I bet she has full coverage, which is more expensive. But she's also been driving for a long time too. More experience and less or no points makes your rates lower. I have only had my car for 3 years. In those three years I've paid as much for my own car on Liability only, that my friends pay for full coverage on their cars while under their parents insurance. And I've got news for you. My brother has pretty much the same exact car as me, and he has the same exact insurance company as i do, and he pays almost TWICE AS MUCH. Try 2700 a year. For liability. And it's only more expensive for him because they charge more for guys than they do for women.
Let me explain for you how Liability and Comp and Collision work. Liability means that if i get in an accident, it only pays for the other guy's car, not mine. Any damage costs to my car has to come out of my own pocket. Full coverage (aka comp and collision, with the liability) will pay for damages to the other car AND yours. Liability is the minimum. And look how much Phil has to pay for his car. And his car is close to the same year as yours, his is an 86. If you were to pay your own insurance it would be almost as expensive as Phil, or if your lucky, close to what I used to pay (1500 to 1600 a year). Full coverage would cost about 3000 a year. Please understand that I have every right to be excited that my minimum coverage insurance was cut in half, because I am the one who pays for all of it. You're car isn't in your name. But when it is, and when you have to pay your own insurance on your own company separate from mom's, you'll see, it's not that easy. Pay your own insurance, and then talk to me. You have to understand that I don't have the luxury of being on my parents insurance. Not trying to rag on you, no hard feelings, just trying to give you the bigger picture, and the reality check.

I know, you dont think I work my ass off doing **** they pay illeagle mexicans to do? I work my ass off for $5 an hour to pay for my car, everyone thinks the whole car was givin to me and my mom pays every cent, in reality, my mom bought the car for me as a gift $450 gift, my birthday present, early -graduation present, confirmation present and christmas presnt thats the only thing I will not pay off eventually, I payed for ALL of my mods, except the nitrous, wich I was short about $150, I saved up every penny I could, I still do. the only things I couldnt pay for were the paint job and the transmision, and the trans I didnt even need...But yeah I know what ur saying, and I cant wait to pay off my car, trust me!
I bet if matt's firebird was on his own policy it would be more expensive than phil's. young male with a V8 rwd coupe. thats the worst insurance rate you can get.

Ah, but see, we're talking about insurance here. I know you work, that's good. But, mods are technically unnecessary. They aren't something you need, they are something you want. So I wouldn't expect that your mom pays for those. Heck, I just paid my own brother for working on my brakes for me. But you DO need insurance. The point is, you said that your mom promised to pay your insurance, so I'm assuming that's what she does, and that that's what she'll continue to do as promised. I'm not talking about mods or paint jobs, or transmissions, particularly ones you don't need (haha). I'm just talking about insurance. My car looks like crap right now cuz I can't afford a paint job. And I still owe my dad money for the parts he bought me to fix things everytime something broke. Try doing that and paying insurance. Then it gets tough. I'm glad you know what I'm saying. I'm just trying to make you realize that at your age, you've got it a lot easier than most of the rest of us do on the board here. That's fine, enjoy it while you can. But when you get to be 17 and you drive, and you get a better job (which by the way, the one you're working is paying you under minimum wage, that's no good! find another one) you'll find that you'll have a lot more responsibilities than you'd ever have expected, and it only gets worse. Haha. Sorry to be a killjoy. ;)

you bringing all this other crap into the equation, we were talking about insurance here not everyones bills. and as long as you brought it up; wasnt ur paint job and trans like 3k, or at least thats what you said thay were? so your parents ate that bill? they're also pay your insurance. um...how about gas whos gonna pay for that? its like 50 bucks to fill up a car and i bet your thing doesnt get good gas mileage either. doesnt seem like "your" car is really yours, i mean most money invested into it are your parents money not your. well and the fact that its under your MOMs name also has something to do with it. once you get out there and pay some bills like real people do then you're welcome to talk crap all you want for now ill politely advice u to shut it kid...

Same here, my parents never bought me a car, next paid for insurance, never had anythng to do with any of my vehicles. Hell I started working at 15 to start saving up and stuff. While it would've been nice to have some stuff paid for I learned responsibillity REAL quick, lol.

I pay my own insurance, paid my own insurance on the caprice i had too.
think the reason my insurance is so cheap is because my dad's in his sixties and has never had a serious accident. But i love how under our insurance policy, my mom's 06 eclipse GT is a 4 door...

i guess im kinda late to join the party, but congrats on the lower rate liz!
My insurance did the same thing when i had was with them for 3 years, then again at 5 years. I think my next insurance drop will come when I'm 25, then maybe i'll be able to afford full coverage... and maybe even a vehicle that deserves full coverage.
NJ still needs auto insurance reform, its a joke here.
1337jeeper, if you get a ticket with points, those points stay on your insurance driving record for 3 years from the time you were "convicted"/paid the fine, and it will be factored into your rates every year you renew. depending on the timing/date of the ticket paid and when your policy renews, it may overlap so youll actually be paying for the points for 4 years. I think companys like geico check 5 years back when writing a policy so some insurance companys may hold points longer, but i think 3 years is the average.
i'm down to only 2 points on my insurance from a speeding ticket i got in VA in jan 2004. jan 2007 it will be gone, BUT my policy renews in 9/2006, so it wont show a decrease in my policy till 9/2007.

you're telling me
they pulled me over the first day of school when i pulled out of the highschool lot but waited until i was half-way up the hill to catch up to me... past the middle school (1/4-1/2 mile away)
then exactly a week later they pulled me over on franklin tpke. (female cop, only one in town) she pulls out in front of me & stops in the middle of the road. then proceeds to tell me that i was going so fast when i slowed she heard my tires squeal.
you stop in front of me in a 35 & ask why my tires squeal... hmm...
i hate mahwah cops.
