View Full Version : So did anyone else hear about the NJ bill

that has been proposed to allow the state to use cameras to issue tickets for people speeding or going through red/yellow lights? I read about it 2 weeks ago and nobody seems to have noticed it and complained. The state will make a killing off the ability to issue tickets just from cameras at intersections. Those portable "this is your speed" stations will be able to issue speeding tickets as well. Better watch the way you drive!

Isn't there stuff that you can buy, e.g. sparys, covers, etc. that make your license plate invisible to those cameras that snap the pictures?
JL8Jeff
06-08-2006, 11:43 AM
Yeah, but all that stuff is illegal as well. So now you would have another reason for a cop to pull you over.

Sure is, but they can do some seroius stuff to you if you are caught with it on. Was this really approved? When will this go into effect? Why does NJ have to be a police state?

I heard this on 101.5 two weeks ago. It was not approved, and I think it's only a proposal at this point (not a bill). Whatever it is....it's BS. Just another govt. fundraiser to pad their pensions.
but heres the one main issue that i remember hearing way back(but it may be wrong), in a court of law, you have the right to crossexamine your accuser. and in this case its a camera, something that cant be brought into court and questioned so if you plead not guilty and go to court it should be simple to win. The people who just accept it and pay it will still make the state a lot of money. like i said, i dont know how true that is though.

They already have do this in NYC and VA and DC, very hard to fight and win.

Yeah, but they will say that the Camera never lies and that its always 100% true. Guilty untill proven innocent.

maybe if you consider an "unclear licence plate cover" ticket for 45 dollars serious stuff.

So the cop pulls you over for unclear license plate, then hits you with illegal tint, then finds your cats are missing and next thing you know you're paying hundreds of dollars in fines and your insurance goes up too. Why would you want to give a cop a good reason to pull you over in the first place? The last I heard was this camera ticket thing is a proposed bill but there is absolutely nobody fighting against it and it will sail right through. So be prepared!

Much like Jeff pointed out, and much like anyone knows...its never just one thing.
Its never "just a speeding ticket"
Its never "just a seat belt ticket"
Its a unclear licence plate...oh so that means you must be speeding...and since you took off your seat belt to get your wallet, that means you didnt have your seat belt on cause the cop didnt see you with it on. BTW, was that your cell phone that is sitting next to you? That cant be good. Is this exhaust legal? Sounds too loud to me. Can you tell me if this thing would pass a random inspection? Cause I dont think it would.
$600 dollars, 5 pts and a court date later, you are subjected to riding your Huffy to work every day.

well that coating you spray on your license plate is invisible so a cop would never be able to tell you have it on. ive used it before and it worked like a charm. i drove through a toll booth without paying to test it and i saw the camera go off but i never received a ticket in the mail, this was about 2 years ago. all it does is reflect the flash of the camera so your license plate is too bright to make out the letters/numbers. im sure that if you keep blowing off the same tolls tho they would just look out for your car and pull you over tho. i dont know for sure if the camera flash goes off during the daytime, i tried it at night, so i dont know how effective the spray is in daylight.

what you heard about was the click it or ticket program that ran for one week. its already over, but during that time police do not have descretion for giving seat belt tickets. if you are not wearing one then they have to give you a ticket, and they also had roadside checks for it.
i guess no one payed attention to me not wearing one  slackers....
i got pulled over twice for "click it or ticket week", but i dont get tickets anymore so it didnt matter.

new jersey is lagging behind many states in this. PA already has cameras, most of the southwest uses these systems, and NYC installed cameras years ago.
the laws that are proposed are not open to put cameras everywhere. just in areas that are known for high accident/incident rates.
you can read that as, only put cameras where they can pay for themselves. lol

 i don't see the problem in this. From what i've heard its to ticket for people running red lights. i don't run red lights, so i don't have to worry about it. i would wawnt some jackass drunk who runs a red light be issued a summons and get tried for it. i fail to see a problem here. Driving isn't all about 'drive like an ******* unless a cops around' just drive like a freakin human being and you shouldn't have an issue.
yes, i go through yellow lights that i probably shouldn't. as long as everyone knows how long a yellow is, you have plenty of time to stop. (btw, the length of time a yellow lasts is determined by the speed limit in the area. a 40 mph zone, yellow lasts 4 seconds, a 35, its 3.5 seconds, 55 = 5.5 seconds and so on. this should have been taught in drivers ed)
They actually have 1 traffic light in my town with a camera on it, but its a metering signal meant for balancing traffic.

I got one from a DC camera. Speeding, not a red light. But there were no points.

So if they can't prove who's driving why would anyone ever pay the fine? Something's not right about that scenario. I hear the speeding part is 8-9 mph above the posted speed limit.

I did dude, its gonna be crazy. Heres the run down I got..
NJ is starting up a 30 day speeding ticket rally. From what I hear,
every trooper assigned to this has to hand out 1 ticket every 10 to 20
minutes. They will be focusing in around this area so watch out.
Here's what a New Jersey State trooper sent:
Starting today, New Jersey will launch a 30 day speeding ticket
frenzy. The state estimates that 9 million dollars will be generated in
speeding tickets. 1 million will go to pay state troopers' overtime.
There will 50 state troopers on duty at all times patrolling the 9 main
intersections and highways. They are the following:
I-295 north and south
1-95 (Jersey Turnpike) north and south
1-80 east and west
I-287 north and south
I-78 east and west
1-195 east and west
1-280 east and west
Rt. 130 north and south
Garden State Parkway north and south
I'm warning everyone now that 5 mph above the limit can justify a
ticket and every state trooper is supposed to pull a car over and write
a ticket every 10 to 20 minutes. They have issued 30 brand new unmarked
Crown Victoria cruisers and are bringing in all of their part timers on
full time. If you work in NJ, NY, DE or CT you will probably take one of
these highways. It's up to you how fast you are going when they clock
you.
101.5 FM confirmed all of this. So be safe and don't forget speeding
tickets are on you. You've been warned."
Then the same friend, emailed me the following:
Driving Ticket fine increase in NJ:
Starting on August 15th, the price of a ticket for violation of NJ
Law39:3-29 (failure to show your driver's license, registration, or
insurance card at the time you are stopped) is going from $44.00 to
$173.00. Please make sure your vehicles have the proper documents in
them. If you jump in the car to run to the store and forget your wallet
with your license in it and you are stopped.... Oh well... you just
spent $173. And the fine for not having all three documents is $519!!!
Forward to people in NJ, and let them know of this change. And be
careful, the fine for hand held cell phone use while driving will be
going up to $180.00.
failure to exhibit has been 173 for over 2 years already.

my camaro is in my fathers name but the saturn is in my name, my sisters lexus is on the business' name and all other cars are under my mothers name. yesterday i drove the camaro, my sister drove my saturn, and my father drove the slaab, and my mother drove the lexus. how can cameras account for that? thats not just a random occurance. my family is always playing musical cars.

yeah man that email has been going around for a long long time. seriously think about that. each trooper has to give out a ticket every 10 to 20 minutes? impossible not to mention a gross negligence of resources. and to openly say that they are giving tickets to pay for police overtime?! you dont even have to be a lawyer to see how that would backfire in their faces besides the fact that they say they are using the money to pay for overtime and at the same time pulling in all their part timers for full time. yeah that makes sense. if you get these emails and believe them youre a tool.

They can't account for who is driving the car, that's why they don't issue any points. The ticket is mailed to that person that the car is registered to.
My dad got one on 495 near DC about 2 years ago. The ticket was for 10 over, it was only about $50-$60 and no points. They had a picture of the entire van that he was driving, and a close up of the license plate.

if this is true (im guessing its not now) the gov./state police are dicks...
speaking of cameras and violations, my quick story deals with EZpass, well one day a few years back i got a letter in the mail saying i didnt pay the toll at an ezpass and included on the letter was a picture of my car going through. i figured it may have been a machine error or i didnt hold the pass up high enough, or that since i was using my parnets pass, it picked me out. later i found out you can use ez pass on different cars without notifying them, but anyway, the day after i got that letter, i got 5 more, lol all with pictures of me blowing EZ pass tolls. Now i stopped to think where i was going on the parkway and i realized i was at work on that day at those time. I was very confused. In the one picture i could barely make the drivers face out. It was my friend, i had let him borrow the car to go to his moms second wedding and he didnt know her ez pass thing wasnt working. so they sent the violations to me because of the plate. That day i found my friend, gave him the papers, and he took care of it, well his mom did or whatever but it got cleared up. This is one case where i liked the fact that there cameras, because up until i saw his face, i was dumbfounded as to how my SS was in south jersey while i knew i was working, lol.
