I have finally decided on what drivetrain will be going in my newest car, a '88 Iroc Convertible. And I will be starting the swap hopefully this weekend. The drivetrain will be coming out of my '89 Iroc, a 68k mile 350 TPI/700R4 combo. I am also swapping over the entire wiring harness, dash, most of the interior, and the front clip.
I only had my 89 running for a few seconds back when it got dropped off a few months back. i didnt plan on using the motor so i didnt care. but now i wanted to make sure itd run before i spend the time swapping it. so anyways. i went to try to start it again(last month it wouldnt start) and no luck, still just cranking. I checked the fuel schrader valve, and no fuel pressure at all, nothing. I also never heard the pump prime so i decided to chekc the pump. I applied 12v to the "g" terminal in the ALDL connector, and the fuel pump relay clicked on, but still no pump to be heard. Next step was to check the wiring closer to the pump. I already have most of the interior gutted so i could easily access the wiring where it goes through the body behind the back seats. I used a multimeter and poked the probe through the tan power wire, and got 0 volts(everything off) i then jumped the aldl connector again and got 11v(using a low charged jumper pack underhood, no battery). so the wiring seemed fine but i still heard no fuel pump, and those tpi pumps are very noticeable. To make sure it wasnt another issue, i un-did the jumper and checked for voltage while turnign the ignition on, according to the multimetter that was fine and it had voltage for a few seconds(when the pump would prime) So basically i think i just have a dead fuel pump.
So, I'm confident enough now that i'm gonna do the full swap, and i'll deal with the fuel pump issue once its in the '88 Iroc(since it'll even probably be getting the '89 tank as well) If some other issue pops up after the swap i guess i'll deal with it then. and if the motor turn out to be a waste, i always got a tbi 305 or THE 383 to go in it, lol. But i figured for a cruiser 'vert with a custom hood and unique paint job, a TPI motor would be the best.
