ok, im trying to decide what to do with my SS, as far as the motor goes. im putting my plans for the blown 408 on hold for a while, since i'm gonna be looking to buy a house in less than 2 years, and saving money is a concern now. However, i do want to get the car on the road again this summer. I am getting about 5k through the insurance for a motor. i can get a 01-02 GM crate LS1 engine for 4800, or a 01-03 LS6 (405hp)longblock for 5200.(both would be from GM) Since i have a '01, i already have the LS6 intake. I know ls6 heads and cam are "overrated" but if i went with a base Ls1 motor and did a H/C combo thatd be at least 3500 for h/c and i'd still need a shortblock since my stock block was destroyed by the #1 rod. so itd be 3500, plus 800(or so) for a new block, new rods, new pistons, assembly...and that all would add up to at least 6500. If i get the LS6, i'd swap out the cam anyway to get some more power and i'd do LT headers right off the bat, and of course a tune by bill. so, does the cammed LS6 w/LTs sound like a reasonable idea? since itll only cost me about 1000 out-of pocket to do. Im annoyed i cant go through with my original plans for the 408 but i guess you gotta growup someday. and i'll keep the new 6.0l block to build the motor in a couple of years.

I'd definitly go with the LS6 over the LS1.
