Was going to ask here if everyone was ok..but I found out the answer anyway..
The shop I work for in elmwood park also does the police towing for the town. (Impounds, accidents, etc)
Last night my friend and I responded to a call for a car that got hit by a train on the tracks near the taco bell in EP.
When we arrived we found the beat up remains 97 camaro. It was a 6 spd z28.
No one was in the car when we showed up so I had no idea if anyone was injured or not. Cops said no, but didnt really have time to discuss details..
After struggling to get the car off of the tracks with a wrecker. (It had 2 rolling wheels, both fronts, the one rear was sheared off and the other side didnt move.) We started the fun task of pulling it up on the flatbed. Gas was pouring out and it was a preety ****** situation all the way around.
This afternoon tho I did get some good news. The mother and son (driver) came down to check the car out. What we thought happened did happen...
The car got sideways on the rubber "mats' they put on the areas of track that auto traffic drives over to make it smooth..it slid off the road to an area where the car was resting on the rail by its frame and with the angle the car just couldnt get off the tracks. Luckily he was able to get out of the car and to safety. sure it sucks that he had to witness his car hit by a train but thankfully he was alive to tell about it.
All in all i was happy to know that none of you were injured and that the driver was ok. His plans are to just part it out. From a quick look the motor and trans look fine. the rear is what took the damage..
As he was leaving the yard today I asked him if he knew about the site and he said no, so I told him about it and let him know there was a classifieds section that he should try, figured someone would be looking for this stuff.
Hopefully he checks it out.
Later guys, stay safe out there, especially in the rain.
Joe
