View Full Version : Go Racing or not???

those of you who know me understand that all i ever want to do with my time is work on and race cars. it is past teh point of being a hobby, i am completely obsessed.
that being said, i was offered a free race car. it is an older car, somewhat outdated, but enough to get me started in dirt oval racing.
the only problem is that the time and money invovled would leave a lot less time to work on my camaro. the expense is really minimal compared to what i was planning to do to the camaro in the next year, so i am really not worried about that.
it also wouldn't really effect the late night hours that i throw into working on the club adn events, so that is a non issue to me as well.
the only thing it would cost me as far as time is saturday nights from april through september, a few week nights in between, and if things go well several friday nights.
the biggest thing holding me back is that i wanted to have my camaro finished for power tour '07. with the time and money put into the race car i doubt that would happen unless i stumble across a winning lottery ticket between now that then.
there are a few options, and i have lots of different kinds of racing experience to fall back on(although most of it was many years ago) for the skills required. i have never raced on dirt or an oval before and i think that is the adventure that makes this so attractive to me.

Power tour goes on every year. Free race cars come along... how often?

yeah, but power tour will only start at e-town once.
i would go the racing route anyhow. power tour, while it may be a big ass show, is just that: a big ass show. you will be one of 20 bazillion people, and the only person who will know that your car is there is you, and maybe a handful of us. do the racing thing, and who knows, maybe you'll make some money to be able to put towards the car.

i am very much leaning towards figuring out a way to go racing. i already have apps in looking for a part time night job. hopefully something will work out and i will have money to do both.
that just leaves the time factor. i don't have a lot of free time and i have never really been good at planning my time very well. so this could get interesting to say the least.
i am taking one of the cars either way. it is a perfectly straight frame(never wrecked), a brand new body(only time it was ever on the car was the day it was fabricated), and a bunch of other little stuff. the class i am looking at runs a sealed spec motor, so engine isn't a major concern or expense.
i figure the worst thing that happens is i get everything cleaned up and together as best i can and can't go racing. then i can just sell everything and not really lose much, if any, money

Skip the race car and concentrate on the street/strip camaro.
Don't get the race car. You will have TWO money pits!
At some point you will want to spend money on a house/ woman or whatever else (maybe a man for you? ;) )
Seriously though, stick with what you have now

PT isn't starting at E-town, it's starting out in Ohio....

you already find it hard to manage your projects and your time as it is right now. skip the race car. work on the camaro. buy a house. after all that is done, get a race car.

:werd: that sounds to me like the best plan.

Once you buy a house you can buy 1, 2, 3 or more Camaros to play with or take apart.

Yeah right, once you buy a house you'll find less money and time to spend. Once you have a woman in that house, all hope is lost.
Live for the moment - go race.

Yea, but this isn't about a Camaro. It's about a free one of these:

The car might be free, but the hobby of racing sure isn't. And if that will interfere with the goal of buying a house then don't do it. How will you get the race car to the track? Need to buy a trailer and a truck. The car has no motor so that's needed as well. And after the first race, you know Tim will take the car apart and it will sit for 999 years! If buying a house isn't that big of a priority then go ahead with a race car, but having 2 different race cars for 2 different types of racing doesn't make much sense either. Sell the 76 to fund the dirt track car.

ah yes, but isnt the one that tim is getting for free completely beat to ****? that's gonna take more than a buffing pad. it's gonna take moolah. granted, tim can do whatever he wants with his time. it's not my car, and it's not my life. but because he wanted opinions, i would have to say that with the collection of stuff he has in his backyard, his camaro, the fact that he doesn't really dig the crown vic anymore, his feelings on wanting to move out and the need to build up funds to do so, the fact that everyone asks tim for help on their own cars, to which he is much obliged, more often than not, which takes up time for him to do his own thing, and the circumstance that even without other people's projects he keeps up with a full time job and barely has time for fun, let alone have time enough to get his projects done. if he takes the car, it's gonna sit for a while.

Erm... I'm even beginning to change my mind with all this input. Maybe the Camaro is a better idea given all the other things you're tring to accomplish.
How do I change my poll choice?
