What's the deal with this? All I've heard/read so far is that they're planning a partnership, but Wagoner is hesitant about it. What does this potentially mean for GM's future? What will GM get out of it? Is it a better deal for Nissan and Renault?

I dont like it at all myself. Kirkoran or whatever his name is, has been and will continue to be bad news for GM. He is there for one reason, and one reason only, to cut up and sell as much as GM as he can so that he can make money.
What does it mean for GM? Well, could mean a much leaner process of making cars as Nissan is one of the top 2 most profitable car companies in the world. Nissan has only a handful of chassis and drivetrain systems.
Nissan gets GM's buying power and overall massive network of engineering and design. While GM-NA might be lagging, the rest of the world is blowing up, especialy China.
I do not like this alliance, and I hope that Wagoner knocks this down with swift blow. I can see a bridge built with Ford and Renault/Nissan, but with GM, when they seem to be starting to take a turn upwards with vehicles and image. There are a lot of bright lights at GM, I think that this could mess things up. GM has enough European as well as Asian companies in its world makeup, I dont think that having them will improve anything.

It will all depend on the 2nd qtr sales results. Even though GM has taken great cost reductions there sales for the last couple of years have dropped. (saved on cost, but lack of sales other then the sale of half of GMAC)

A few years ago they had 28% of the market now its down to 20% and speculation is that 2nd qtr sales are down the CEO of GM is out and the head of Nissan is in.

GM employees are all in funk about this, only time will tell.

I don't think it will be too bad if they keep the Ideas of GM as far as power, but incorporate the Nissan image and looks into the cars. GM's dash board is antiquated at best still using knobs from like the 70's. Nissan's interiors are much nicer and current looking.

I am glad to see an american company looking to merge with the asian companies but just stick to doing what you both do best. American POWER, with Asian LOOKS. Arraghghahrhrhrhhghhghg

my buddy bought a G6 today. do everything in your power to fend off nissan.

nissan will be bad news for GM. the only way i will accept it is if nissan and gm do not share parts in any way. nissan stays nissan, and gm stays gm. maybe some engineering help here and there and thats about it.

Gebe, when was the last time you sat in any of GM's new cars? Buttons from the 70's?
And Nissan with high quality interiors? They are still cheap-o interiors. And design?

every time i sit in a nissan I do ask myself why people call GM interior crap, cuz these nissans have cheap plastics, fake metals, the (auto) shifter is all clicky, just all around cheap feeling interior. Took them till a model yr or two ago to finally get auto lights...

and i said asian CARS.... :p

I don't like the idea. Like, are we going to have to start saying GM-Nissan like Daimler-Chrysler? God that would be horrible.
