Looking for '50/'51 Merc project

Ok, I am now starting a search for a new project, I am looking for a 1950 or 1951 Mercury 2 dr coupe. I know they can still fetch good money in poor shape but hopefully i'll be able to find something over the next year or so. I would be willing to trade my 1988 Iroc Vert(needs assembly as of now still) for a '50/'51 chassis. I dont want a drivetrain in it, or even any rolling gear, just a frame and body will do. Hell, i'll even throw in my bronco project with the iroc for something decent, both the vert and bronco could be running with minor work and a handfull of parts. Oh and interior isnt a big deal either. If anyone has a lead on one or any info, id appreciate it, i'll even go to look at 4 doors but im not to gun-ho on them. If i find one at a good price, the 88 vert will be sold if a trade isnt possible. So, keep an eye out for me, i'll pay a $100 finders fee IF i buy a car you find me. -Paul

Good luck finding one that already hasnt been restored/worked thoroughly and the person isnt asking an arm and a leg for it. The prices of the older cars have gone through the roof! They have hotrodded these cars forever and only got alot more attention after Cobra.

Good luck finding one that already hasnt been restored/worked thoroughly and the person isnt asking an arm and a leg for it. The prices of the older cars have gone through the roof! They have hotrodded these cars forever and only got alot more attention after Cobra.

i know, its more of a dream to eventually get one, Even if i find one with like no good metal, for the right price, at least its a good starting point since it will be 90% custom and a long term goal/project. It'd be chopped, channelled, sectioned, shaved, everything. 383/th350 drivetrain(perhaps ls1) and all custom interior. I'm downsizing with my projects and parts and getting so that i could actually move in less than 2 years. I also know its gonna take a logn time finding the one i want thats why i said i hope to find one over the next year, lol, but if not, i'll keep looking. I'm gonna give it some more research to see if a 4dr could be modded enough into a 2 door(like if the front and rear clips are excatly the same. With all the cutting/fabricating i plan, lengthening the door and shortening the wheelbase wont be a problem at all.


Ted, the 88 iroc vert right now is a rolling chassis, i pulled my 383 from it last year and then bought the car back like 2 months ago. First off it needs a paint job. I have the complete driovetrain and interior out of a 89 iroc that i'll drop in it when i get a chance. thats a 350tpi/700r4 combo with 68k original miles. It also has a daytona iroc cowl hood, and the front clip off the 89 will go on it as well. The 88 has the 16 " iroc wheels and all the original vert specific pieces, spoilers, interior trim etc, just need the latch to keep the top locked down in the rear and maybe some odd and end weatherstripping.

I'll keep my eyes open...I'm gonna be working on a 51 for a customer next month....if it accidently disappears from the shop I'm sure his insurance will cover it! Hahahah. (guarding the shop door with a shotgun)

if your looking for a plymouth project i know someone selling a 54 belevedere thats not a bad project its still solid he's asking 1,000 its a flat head 6 stick on the column

only plymouths i would consider are early 30's like my grandfather had.

I'm asking like 400 for each mower, they are both very solid not rusted out, run great, one has a brand new plastic catcher, one has brand new pulleys/belt drive, i see them sell for up to 1000 used.
the ecm is for a 3.4, i highly doubt it will work on a 96, but $10 if you wanna risk it. And i'll only be around monday and tuesday, i'll PM you my address later.

only plymouths i would consider are early 30's like my grandfather had.
My dad's current project is a 33 plymouth cabriolet we are shoehorning a 426 Hemi between the fenders. Dont know what year your grandfather had but they werent too different.

im not sure exactly what year he had, or actually years. I dont have any specific preference to any 20s-30s style of car so i decided if i ever did do an early hot rod, i would try to find out what he had and do that one. Its funny because recently while talking to my mom, she say how much like him i am, with the number of cars and all the spare parts. She remembers he had a few plymouths at different times from the early 30's, i think i even have an old lisence plate from one of them. She told me they would always have extra parts all around the house when she was a kid, and during the winters she'd remember him basically dissassembling the car and bringing it into the house(like i sorta do now, lol). I didnt really get to know him since he passed when i was like 6 or 7 but it weird how we are both so much alike.

At my old job, we let a customer leave his old Desoto in the lot for what ended up being over a year or more. I guess it was a mid to late 50s model. It had one of the original hemis (not the later 426) in it – there was a name on the valve covers, something like Blue Flame or something. It even had an automatic – big doings back in the day. We even got it running, albeit poorly. The motor & carb needed to be rebuilt, we just wanted to see if it would fire up.

That would have been a cool project. I should have tried to buy it, but I didn’t know any better – and my view was too singular – only f-bodies. That would have been a great hot rod.

My point might be not to limit yourself. Or I felt like reminiscing about a good car I let go. :)
