So I'm taking off my EGR... exhaust side blt is rusty, so i soak it down with PB and work ont he intake side. I get that on and all, and go back to the ex side. Still wont budge, soaked it with more PB... waited a few and tried again... and snapped the mother f'in bolt. So now I have an egr valve with a tube witting int he exhaust (not held on by anything) and the intake side open... and an exhaust manifold that has a bolt stuck in it that prevents me from gettign the blockoff plate on, and will probably blow the tube out of it once i run the car leading to a massive exhaust leak.
What is the quickest/cheapest/easiest solution here???

Yeah, Sears makes a screw-out tool that might work. I might be able to make it up there to help you out Stack.

Is the broken stud exposed? Heat & a stud extractor or maybe vise grips. Is the manifold iron? You might need to remove the manifold.
I won't even ask why you removed it.

same thing happened to me, i drilled it out and just used a bolt and nut on that side to hold the block off plate. its holding out great, that was like 2 years ago.

picked it up (45 bucks, WTF!) but ended up not using it due to no room for a drill... plate is TIG'd but we forgot a side... RTV will do for now there.
Thanks to Alex, and anyone who wants to see hsi welding can look at my car tomorrow
Alex can TIG weld?

Trust me it isn't pretty lol I relized as soon as we had left that I should have at least grinded it down to smooth it out, but it works so Im happy.
not for nothing, but you should never have to grind TIG welds down.

I don't think it's worth approx. 1 MPG to pump my exhaust back thru my intake manifold.
BonzoHansen
08-21-2006, 07:30 AM
Wait, you took it out for mileage??
Savage_Messiah
08-21-2006, 01:01 PM
you lose milage.
the thing pumps exhaust back into the intake manifold... how'd you liek it if someone shoved one end of a tube up your ass and the other into your mouth?

edit - MIGd not TIGd

You know it is only under certain circumstances, and removing it will greatly increase emissions? I highly doubt you will notice any MPG gain. We only removed them in the past because they were on the intake and the good intakes didn't have provisions.
I guess your computer needs to be ‘fixed’ in order not to trip a light, right?
Edit, quick google:
EGR Theory. EGR serves one purpose and one purpose only. That purpose is to reduce Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx). Undernormal combustion, Nitrogen(N2)Oxygen (O2) in the air and Hydrocarbons (HC) in the fuel combind into water(H2O) Carbon dioxide (CO2) and the Nitrogen remains unchanged. Under very hot combustion temperatures, the Nitrogen reacts with the other two byproducts and forms Nitrogen oxide (NO). After being released into the atmosphere, it picks up another Oxygen and becomes Nitrogen dioxide (NO2). In the presence of sunlight,
it combines with other compounds like Hydrocarbons and forms Smog. Since exhaust gas is inert (very stable) it doesn’t burn again. So by being introduced into
the combustion chamber, it will lower combustion chamber temps enough so that
the Nitrogen doesn’t react with the other compounds and is passed unchanged out
the tailpipe thus not contributing to smog. Now, since exhaust gas doesn’t burn, it
doesn’t exactly help with combustion. At higher RPM’s, this really isn’t noticable,
but at idle, the reintroduction of exhaust gas will cause a very rough idle and can
cause stalling if to much is introduced into the combustion chamber
IIRC, no EGR at WOT.

EGR does nothing to help or hinder performance. If it gets clogged then the computer will have problems. Therefore the correct thing to do is replace a clogged or faulty EGR and keep the computer happy. And in case you didn't already know, your computer is setup to directly call:

Once again your user title fits bonzo  I said three times now it'll LOWER my PMG by a little and I don't care.. .and also I do know it's only under certain conditions not WOT. My car is my daily driver tho, so more often than not I'm at part throttle, idling t a light, etc

as an alternative to actually spending money to fix the EGR, you can rip out the rest of your emissions equipment along with it. then take the check valve that comes with the vapor canister and place it onto the vacuum line that opens the EGR. now the computer thinks it is happily opening the EGR, and you have less useless **** in your engine compartment.
it is a total win win situation :D
