not cool....

most stuff with government keeping tabs on us i never cared about.. i don't care if they monitor my phone conversations, text messages, emails, or any other form of correspondence.. i have NOTHING to hide with regards to any of that, and in fact, i feel slightly safer knowing that they have the potential to catch terrorists and the like using these methods. Installing black boxes on planes is wonderful, but putting something like that in each of our cars?

Maybe i'm slightly biased here because i, like many of you, occasionally travel at an excessive rate of speed and hope not to get caught. However, if this was such a huge problem, I would think that in all my years of driving, I would have gotten more than 1 ticket that eventually got dropped. Every other time I've been pulled over, I usually got a warning, a ticket for something else, or a slap on the wrist. Now they're bringing the detection of speeders up to a similar level as the detection of terrorists? Only difference is, according to this, they'll prosecute everyone, not just weed out the stuff they're looking for.

That's a big huge pile of ********.

Its been in cars for a while. Engine computers store information for a very long time. If and when your engine throws a code, the computer locks in what hapend, date and time, current speed, RPM, as well as temperature, etc.
I forgot who said it, but in the other thread, they said they had no problem with the goverment tapping your phone and info, because you have nothing to hide, but now they are tapping into your driving, where we sometimes do break the law. Its the same thing, goverment is invading your privacy, for the sake of "saftey" or whatever.
Just like tapping phones is helping trap terrorists, tapping cars will help keep speeders and other bad drivers off the road...keeping everyone safe. Arent you willing to give up your privacy for that?

on star can see most of that stuff.

just remember, the year after o2 sensor testing came out, o2 sims came out, the year after obd2 came out, the tuning software deleting the codes came out.......

we have nothing to worry about but how much the software will cost

that was your loving sister who said it. and are you saying that speeders are as much of a threat to society as terrorists? I'm not even talking people who drive 90-100+ mph, i'm talking about those of us who typically travel 75-80 mph, which is how fast you have to drive in a lot of places to avoid being run over... sure, the possibility of an accident is there, but think of all the people who do it vs the number that cause an accident.. and then think about how plans made by terrorists would be 100% effective at killing people if they were not caught. The same? I think not.

Am I saying it? No, not at all, I dont make laws. But the goverment does, and if you are unsafe, and driving at an excessive rate of speed, that is breaking the law and and certain mph, is a careless or wreckless driving.
OnStar has the ability to pinpoint you and see what you are doing instantaniously, but OnStar is not the police and you will not be given a ticket if you go over the speed limit, but the ability for your vehicle to be tracked is there. Hell, you dont even need OnStar, EVER cell phone has a GPS locater in it now, so its not hard to track someone.

I mean no disrespect but that very attitude helps make these black boxes easier to get into cars. Give someone an inch they take a yard.

Also, the black boxes have been in a lot of cars for years ;)

the black boxes that are in cars now store crash data mostly.

Cell phone GPS can be turned off, its pretty simple actually. I'm sure there is a way to disable the GPS feature or the "black box" so that "they" either wont know how fast you were going or they wont be able to prove it because the box was disabled.

but this also raises the question....if the black box knows if you're wearing your seat belt, how fast your going and in what direction, would there be a provision in there to detect if the computer has been tampered with? If there will be that will mean car dealerships will have to notify the corporate office before they flash a PCM. it would also mean aftermarket tuners would be SOL.

I read an article about when N.J. upgraded to the digital Licenses they were also looking at the option of a GPS implanted in the license also
Where if you had warrant's and ect.. they could pin point your location and pick you up...
But fortunately for us they couldn't afford to do it just yet... Because you know they wouldn't catch any real criminal's with it..

Same with in Texas a few insurance companies are experimenting with GPS system's in car's , So that they can bill your car insurance for the amount of time you drive and the hour of the day you drive
Where at certain hour's like rush hour and late Am driving put's you at risk with drunk driver's ect.. and they bill you based by their statistics
Right now it is just in experiment stage's and on Voluntary basis
Because rich people that own Multiple car's and don't drive them much complain they are paying to much for car insurance
Companies like State farm and another one i can't remember want to take it national

I for one can speak about the negative's with this technology back when EZPASS 1st started i traveled to Pittsburgh from Jersey and a few day's after i was home, I got a speeding ticket in the mail from the P.A. state police
Because they estimated my Miles traveled between toll's and calculated that i was speeding ... I managed to get the ticket dropped but it was still an unbelievable thing to have happen , And from some of the new's back then i wasn't the only one hehe

It is all just scam's for the State or Government to make more money off the middle class if you ask me

i am begining to think that this is getting read a little too far into. the government requirements are only calling for data recording similar to what already appears in many vehicles.
currently the systems that GM has in it's vehicles maintain a 5 second snap shot of the data sent and received by the coputer in the car. the more advanced units have g-load sensors built in to them to provide data about angles and forces invovled in accidents.
these systems are also currently not legal for use by insurance companies or the government to determine fault or penalty for an accident. they are legal only as research data for the auto industry to help produce safer vehicles.
there is no broadcast or data transfer device included in the "black box" that would be able to tell whomever is watching what you are wearing, doing, eating, getting some from, or anything else that may take place in a car.
the article you are all basing you opinion on is yet another "what if" ******** text being passed off as news. just look at all the key words and phrases being used:
"They can" - implying the capability, not the practice of
"Tied into GPS navigation computers, EDRs could give" - implying that there is a communication system included with this device, which there isn't
"or make it impossible for a person injured in a crash to deny he wasn't wearing a seat belt." - so now this guy wants us to be afraid we will be sacrificing the ability to be on a jury for another frivolous law suit. you know that breaks my heart

it jsut goes on with a bunch of paranoid rantings about what "could" and "may" be done. wake up to the reality that life and our government are not as big and scary as the media wants you to believe.

BTW, before anyone starts blaming the republicans or W for all this, it was under the presidencyof a liberal named Clinton that GM's research project into this type of data recording was funded by the NHTSA

Big Brother is everywhere and it sucks really. "black boxes" have been in cars for a while now but they way they want, it looks like the want to invade what we do in the car. If these boxes can record everything jsut image, the tickets youget for putting your radio over a certain decibel, going 1 MPH over the speed limit, not using a blinker. the possiblity is limitless on what they can do with this kinda technology. I dont mind the boxes helping the car out with problems but going anything beyond that is just absurd.

to everyone saying "carbed cars are better"...this has nothing to do with the fuel/air delivery system.

this type of stuff is only the beginning...wait until OBD III makes its way to the front. not only will it have this black box, but it instances such as a high speed chase with a cop...that cop will have the ability to shut down each cylinder in the vehicle 1 by 1 if he so chooses. not to mention a check engine light...manufacturers have already began implementing that with giving you a phone call letting you know when youre due for service. with OBD III, when you get a check engine light...the dealer will make you aware, and if you do not take it in for service within a certain amount of time, your warranty will be voided.

in my opinion, i dont see a point in this ticket ********...if manufacturers want to make it easy for law enforcement to catch speeders and such to make the world a safe place...shame on them. they could really make everyhting safe by implementing a governor at 70 instead of 155. not saying i want that, but i think it goes to show how stupid some of this stuff is.

I'm not doing anything wrong so if they want to waste their time listening to me and my family talk about where we are having thanksgiving this year it's fine with me.

As for the box being temporary, it's considered personal propery just like searching your car they need to get a warrant to do so. Even so they have tried using the information in court and it's been thrown out so far. As soon as the laws change IF they change I'm sure someone out there will find a way to re-program them or alter them in some way.

the criminals are usually one step ahead of the law makers anyway. I'm not the type of person that really fears our gov't like a lot of people do. I think it's always been going on just now people are talking about it more and causing more panic then is really necessary.

these boxes are like 2 lbs, you'd be better off not eating one morning and leave the damn box there, minus the aggravation of your air bag deploying due to the relay not recognizing the box being there and you crashing. FTMFL

you guys are too funny.
i remember hearing a lot of the same great fears of tracking systems and all this other **** when they first started putting computers in cars, and even today there are plenty of people who refuse to buy a cell phone because "the goiverment can tap it".
i don't know who among you thinks you are so damn important that the fed gives a good god damn what you do with your time. hell, the states and locals don't even care. if they did we would actually see people getting pulled over for doing 10-15 over teh speed limit on the highway.
your fears are completely irrational and all of the theorising about "if" "maybe" could" or "when" whoever it is you are afraid may do something just looks foolish.
