So, Ive noticed their are a few people who want different cars then what they have now, If you had 35 grand to spend on a car, and modify it what would it be? What Is your favorite kind of car? If their was one car you sold that you would want back what would that be?

With 35g's I still can't afford the car I really want. But with 35g's I could make a real mean Silver & Black 95 Z with alot of extra cash to spend.

35g will get me a used CTS-V.

I'd just dump it into the two I own. :)

For that money I'd keep the one I have plus a second gen TA. Both would be restored, mostly by my hand.

35k? I'd H/C/I my car and save the rest... what I really want is a C6 Z06, that can get half of the car... C5 Z06 is a close second, but I prefer to NOT dump all my money at once ;)

Um. most people back in the 20s and 30s with the rat rods didnt necissarly want them to be flatblack. Its just that they needed to throw a paint on to stop it from rusting. Most wanted nice paintjobs but coulnt afford it at the time and got it later. Its just that flatblack was pinned on it as cool.
Pinstripes are the same thing. After it was black, they wanted to spice it up so they striped it.

Right, but that is why that is 'the look' that is carried on today. Primer w/dull celar coats now. With flames and whitewalls :) And it was really 50s-60s (even late 40s, post WWII), not 20s-30s for the whole rodding thing.

http://www.fastcoolcars.com/images/ford4/1929ford.jpg

Rodders really can do neat, innovative stuff, they have less preceived boundries. You can get so many cool little (and big) ideas from them. They even jumped on EFI well before muscle car guys, just the way the jumped ont he flathead Ford, and then dumped that for the SBC.

I never new that they realy did that back then, I always thought the whole "rat" rod was started by a few guys that were sick of 10 grand paint jobs on hot rods..

I was watching either american hot rod or automaniac when they talked about it..

When our boys got back from WWII the price of new cars was very high, so they would buy older cars and modify them- the birth of hot rodding. Paint was a "nice to have" compared to a car that ran. The whole "Rat Rod" thing happening now is like a day 2 resto, you go with color schemes, parts, and such that are period correct. Some Rat Rod clubs won't even allow ANY nonwearable parts on their cars that was created after the car's build year.

60s was the muscle car era.

The mid to late 50s were the crusing/hot rod scene. (With the 57 chevys, tbirds, buicks, etc)

The 40s were the big car era (Packards, Studebakers, etc)

The 20s and 30s were the "rat rod, gasser" era. They had the 27 fords, the Tbuckets, 5 Window Coupes, etc.

So, uh. Yeah.

Unless you are talking about WHEN people were rodding them, rather that what era car they were. The 60s wernt really that big as the guys comming back had the cash to get muscle cars.Id say it was more of a 30s and 40s thing.

Ian
09-01-2006, 11:08 PM
the rat rod scene went from the 40's-the early 60's. in the 30's the cars were still new, no need to paint them with primer.

BonzoHansen

Unless you are talking about WHEN people were rodding them, rather that what era car they were.Um, yeah, that's what anyone else would say. It's not the age of the car, it's when the movement was happening. It started int he late 40s when the guys got home from WWII. They used the older cars because they were plentiful & relatively cheap. Rat Rods did not exist pre-WWII, regardless of what they were made from.
