Ok, I need a new key for my car, but rather than dealing w/ the "stealership" I'd rather just ask you guys. How can I find out what my VATS resistance number on my key is for my 4th gen? Maybe on my VIN somewhere?

home depot makes VATS keys for like 20-30 bucks a pop

A good locksmith should be able to cut the keys as well. I had to get a new key as well and the locksmith in Perth Amboy had the little machine to read the resistance and then cut a new key.

i believe you can use a voltmeter to check the ohms of the "chip" in the key, but im not 100% positive. i never tried it, perhaps ill try tomorrow to see if it comes up with even a reasonable number. but like j0n said, if home depot makes em, just brign the key there to get a copy and be done with it, let them figure it out, if it dont work brign it right back.

you are correct. i was successful in doing so with my 3rd gen

you can bypass the VATS completely if you don't want to deal with it. there are only 15 possible resistance that VATS uses.they are 392,523,681,887,1,130,1,470,1,870,2,370,3,010,3,74 0,4,750,6,040,7,500,9,530,11,800 OHMS measure the resistance on the key and find a resistor of the same value and wire it inline with the wire that go to the computer and you don't need vats keys anymore.
