Commodore Begins Global Tour

29 September 2006
www.drive.com.au (http://www.drive.com.au/)
It's official: Holden’s Commodore is heading to America.
A Pontiac-badged Commodore will be unveiled at the Chicago motor show in 2007, signalling the start of the Commodore’s global tour.
Speaking at this week's Paris motor show, General Motors product guru Bob Lutz did more than hint that the Commodore would wear a Pontiac nose and badges before long.
“Come to the Chicago auto show and all we be revealed,” said a smiling Lutz, who earlier praised Holden and the new Commodore for being one of “the best vehicles GM has produced”.
Speculation has been rife about Commodores being built in other markets, but nothing has been confirmed to date.
However Lutz’s admission to drive.com.au confirms the rumours that the Commodore could be built in markets such as the United States to provide a large, rear-drive car to help revive General Motors’ ageing vehicles.
The Commodore’s architecture is also expected to spawn many more rear-drive cars within the General Motors world, starting with the born-again Chevrolet Camaro that was unveiled at the 2006 Detroit motor show in concept form.
The Pontiac “Commodore”, which is expected to wear a different name when it goes on sale in the States in 2007, is not the first time a Pontiac has been spawned from a Holden.
Three years ago Holden sent Monaros to the 'States with fresh noses and Pontiac GTO badges to revive one of the most famous nameplates in Pontiac’s history.
Like that car, the rebadged Commodore is expected to get some minor changes, including the classic Pontiac twin-nostril grille.

This is the NEW Commodore built off teh VE chassis. The GTO/Monaro along with its last gen Commodore and other RWD Holdens were built off the VZ platform. VE and Zeta will have a lot in common.
Of course it will have a Pontiac-ized face. There have been rumors of this car coming to the US, but this is the first word out of GM.
Mostly likely will be V8 only, choice of trans will be a 6spd auto or 6spd manual trans. IRS rear Multi-link, different then the trailing arm set up of the GTO. It will also have all the saftey stuff such as dual -stage air bags, tire pressure sensors, side curtain air aigs, as well as other neat-o things like navigation, OnStart, heated seats, Stabilitrac, and some other things. If you look on GMI, you can see the whole public release fo the VE/WM Holden Cars.

that is very cool news.
it is starting to sound like they should take away the old "excitement division" handle and replace it with "bimmer hunter division" :)
gm going head to head for a segment dominated beuropean brands should make for some interesting toys coming our way. i love it :D

I think this will have much more sucess then the GTO did.
#1- brand new chassis
#2- 4dr
#3- No historical name to live up to
#4- offers a lot more cool compared to the Charger.

Al- any legitimacy to the statement saying the camaro will be in production 12 months earlier then (or is it than... liz?) expected?

I think after all the wild rumors leading up to the Camaro's unveiling, we should just sit back, relax, and enjoy knowing that a Camaro is on the way at some point. Speculation is as useless as Monday morning football discussions.

From the info I had prior the announcement, I thought it was going to be a late 07 production start. When they said late 08, I was a little thrown back, but this makes sence to what I remember being told. Who knows.

no offence but the old sti's are alot nicer then this...
maybe not as good as the lumina ss i posted before but that will never happen
old STI's looke like crap IMO. but to each their own I suppose. I know that if I'm in a finacial position that allows me to buy a new car, that converted holden will be on the top of my list!

So am I lacking in knowledge? Is a Commodore a euro car that Pontiac is redistributing is how I took it correct? Car doesnt look too bad but I'm not a big 4door fan. As far as the Camaro being brought up, that things downfall as far as it being retro will be no choice of bigblock... Unless they plan on releasing it with an LS7 (427 sb right?) it will flop with the performance crowd.

A high school kids shouldn't be a big fan of a 4dr. You are not even close to the target market. I am. I have the money and want to buy a new Camaro, but can't. I can't realy pull off a Camaro since I have kids.
Big block? There hasn't been a big block in a Camaro since what, 1973? And not in a passanger car in over 20 years. You think an LS2 Camaro wouldn't be fast enough? Please.

Like Bozo said, Holden is the name of GM's Aussie division, same place we got the GTO.
Camaro is a downfall without a big block? Big Block first gens could easily be smoked by "small block" LS1 powerd Fbodies, and probably LT1 powerd ones as well. The big block is gone for now, it probably wont even show up in the SUV's anymore.

its not announced yet but its pretty much accepted that most pontiacs will carry the Gx moniker

That pic shows why PMD needs new nose treatments. They round off too much at the top of the nose at the hood line. They should square them up more, like the late 60s cars. Or something. That same nose is on all the cars, and I think is a big reason the GTO looks kind of blah/too much like a GP-GA-etc.

However, I like it. :) I also like the GTO. But they really need to differentiate it a bit more.

thats the point! all benzes and bimmers look the same. no one can tell the difference between an acura tsx or an acura tl. thats what sells so thats what pontiac is doing

S class = 1 piece headlights, maybe if you said C and E but even still the E still has the wanna-be-2nd-gen-camaro seperate lights while the C has basically a mix of S class and E class headlights

I believe that was on the cover of Motor Trend. Not bad looking, but looks too much like a tuner car to be called Grand Prix... yet I don't like the Gx names either. But everything I keep hearing says there's going to be a new GTO to share the same platform as Camaro. Is Pontiac going to have both these cars? Would be pretty cool!

There is a write up in the new C&D. They said Impala SS more than once. I'll see if I can scan it.
