SS Hood Functional On A 93 LT1

I was planning on buying an SS hood for my 93 LT1 Camaro. I did a little research and it turns out I supposedly cannot make the hood functional. I called Summit and they say they have no info that says it can work. There parts options do offer the air intake set-up for the SS hood, but it says from 94-97 only. That doesn't include my 93. Does anyone have any insight on whether or not an SS hood can be made functional on my 93 Camaro.

yes it can be made functional. I believe the issue is that your car is speed density, meaning no mass air flow sensor. The 94-97 had the sensor and therefore the duct work included with the kit is designed to accept the sensor, if you wanna run it on your car, you could just make a spacer tube the same length and diameter of a MAF and put it where the maf would go, or just buy an old broken maf and gut the screens and internals wires and just install it(but not worry about connecting anything) The hoods on the 93 are the same through 97 so thats not an issue and the only difference i can think of is that if you car is an automatic, you have a TV cable running off your throttle body, the 94-97 didnt have this and trans was more computer controlled. Perhaps how they mount the duct work for the intake would interfere with this TV bracket/cable. But no matter what, with a little work and creativity, it should be simple to make the setup work.

i somehow knew you'd have an answer to my question. i actually called up RKSport and asked them as well because i am considering the competition hood or the ss hood which both share the same air intake/ram air set up and the guy told me that it should work on my 93. He didnt mention anything about the TV or kickdown cables but like you said, you can 'make' it work. And like you said, i do have an automatic, 4L60 trans. So basically my biggest concern will be the location of the intake tube when it swoops around and comes near the cables. But if i take the cover off for the cables, that leave me alot of room since the butterfly on the throttle body is pretty low and that cable cover takes up at least 2 inches of clearance. So i think i will go ahead and get the hood and air set up and make it happen. thanks for the info man, i appreciate it.

i dont think so, i think the duct work goes around to the passenger side of the intake...

oh yea? i havnt seen under the hood of an actual 96/97 ss so i dont know exactly. the picture of teh air intake set up makes me believe it goes towards the driver side, but if it does go to the passenger side liek you said, then i would be free and clear, aside from the alternator though, heh...well i'll be the one to experiment then...thanks for the input

i checked the picture of the air setup and im almost....actually, im totally sure that it favors the driver side......but non the less, we'll see

yeah, youd just need a "spacer" for where the MAF is, and it seems to clear the tb controls fine.

yea like you said, i'll try and pic up a MAF somewhere just to fill the space in if i have to...but i also have a trickflow intake elbow so i will have to see how that will work but whatever - it doesnt appear that it will cause a problem...

Just an FYI ... u wont fit a strut brace with that in the way, not like it matters. I would think fuctional performance is better than front end stiffness. lol

yea i have the SLP strut brace but i wont have any problem parting with that so that i can have the functional hood....it shouldnt hurt my suspension much anyways since she's full tubular everywhere else on her

If you cut out your hood and decide to put the grill in place of the ram air on the 93-97 SS hood, please let me know where you can get a grill that goes in the vent, I've searched everywhere for one, but can't find the piece!

Just double check the injector fuel line routing on the 93. For some reason I'm thinking the 93 lines cross the top of the manifold and would get in the way of the airbox bolting to the top.

edit: Well, it's not the fuel lines going across the top of the manifold that will be the problem but rather the location on the side of the manifold where they connect to the injector/regulator section. And if you have the stock AIR fittings and hoses on the driver's side they will get in the way. If you still have the AIR stuff you will need to retrofit the 94-97 fittings. Here's a 93 engine for comparison.

yea i will def look into that a bit more - that is the only clearance issue that may be an issue - the lines cross the intake manifold along the rear of the manifold but the plastic lines attach to the hard lines along the driver side so thats my only slight concern - i'd like to see a 96 - 97 ss in person so i can check out exactly where the air box sits
