i had a gear drive installed when my motor was done. i recently swapped out cams and i am in the process of putting the motor back together and noticed something kind of weird. i aligned the dots up with the crank gear and the cam gear like you normally would (crank at 12 o clock position and the cam at 6 oclock position).
when i did this it appears that cylinder 6 is in the firing position and to get the number 1 cylinder in the firing position both dots on the gears are at 12 o clock.
i dont haev the install intructions for this nor can i find htem online anywhere. anyone haev any ideas?
thanks
if im not mistaken, rotate the engine so the cam dot is at the 6 o'clock position, then remove the gear drive setup. then rotate the engine over until it comes to TDC on #1 compression stroke. At which point the cam dot should be now at the 12 o'clock position. Once thats done, you should just slide the gear drive back in. I installed the pete jackson setup in my 383 back in 2000, so its been a while for me dealign with that setup directly, but its not much different that an install with a timing chain.
if im wrong, someone will be sure to correct me.

so how i have it in is fine??
i'm going through it in my head right now and im even drawing pics to help me, lol, for some reason i keep drawing a blank and i have to rethink it over, in a few minutes i should have it, lol.
one quick question, how are you telling when it is each cylinders firing position? are you lookign at the distributor rotor, or say holding you're finger over the spark plug holes? If going by the dizzy, its possible that is put in 180 degrees out. and that would explain the 6 & 1 firing position swap. If going by feeling the compression coming from the cylinder, When #1 cylinder puts out pressure and then stops(comes to TDC) the two dots should, at that time, be lined up(cam 6 o'clock, crnak 12)
