Before i came to school i knew my car was in need of some repair, i lost the flange as mentioned previously and i knew it could use a little work, my dad took it to this local garage/gas station [Sunoco] that he always takes our cars to

According to them they need to replace my exhaust from the headers back and fix the brakes including the rotors... for this they're charging him 1800
He said if he can get out of work and make it to the shop before they close he's going to get a printout and call me with more details.

i've looked at exhausts and i'm rather familiar with the cost of headers but how much for the brakes?

the shop also said my power steering pump leaks, i have an oil leak, and there's something wrong with my transmission. (but they're not fixing those/included in estimate)

Edit:: SmokingSS it looks like i may want that trans

hmm if they're replacing headers back and doing brakes that sounds about right .... the main thing your paying for is labor youd be better off doing it yourself or maybe someone from here can do it cheaper

Get a detailed estimate before they do any work....sounds high to me for a brake job and new cat-back.

99% sure it's all gonna be stock replacement stuff. For that price, they better be replacing damn near the entire brake system too....

that's a rip. Buy headers, a cat (or bullet muffler), a catback, and call up rob and come to my house (1/2 block from him) and we'll install it all lol... will just need to get **** welded

Knipps
10-27-2006, 03:59 AM
and what's to happen with the brakes?

Savage_Messiah
10-27-2006, 05:15 AM
get the full printout. If it's just rotors and pads well that's nothing... if your master is blown thats another story

Way to expensive!! Whats the hourly labor rate? Figure they are marking up the parts by at least 25%

whats wrong with them? they're generally easy to replace.

Dad's calling now to see if they have started working, if not he's having them hold off.

if they're over charging us and its not hard to do why not take care of it myself/with help? no?

found a couple exhausts, any suggestions for headers?

Tru2Chevy

Did you find out if it's a 3.4 or 3.8 yet?

Headers for each will be different.

nope :-?
'til then what about companies?
i found edelbrock and magnaflow exhausts, feedback/suggestions appreciated

Tru2Chevy
10-27-2006, 10:29 AM
Magnaflow catbacks are nice. Pacesetter makes headers for both engines I believe. I don't know if they still sell the headers for the 3.4 cars, but you can still find them new on ebay for about $250.

UPDATE;;

need:
rear axle seals
brake shoes
front brakes
intake manifold gaskets
trans. flush
power steering pump

exhaust has been started...

Tru2Chevy

If it needs intake manifold gaskets, it's mostly likely a 3.4L car.

You could prolly get by without some of that stuff. Mostly depends on how long you are planning on keeping the car.

i plan on keeping it. & for a while if i can
i just got it in may

Then the only thing I would be wary of is the tranny flush. Make sure the fluid isn't already looking crappy, because flushing it then could cause problems.

- Justin

Knipps
10-27-2006, 11:02 AM
according to my dad the guy said it only needs a flush the fluid looks pretty bad

but what should i give the guy the go ahead for? what can i do myself/with help?

Tru2Chevy
10-27-2006, 11:09 AM
Well, the trans flush would probably be the most difficult part to do in your driveway. All depends on your mechanical ability. You don't have to already know how to do everything, but if you are handy, you should be able to do all that stuff with some basic tools, a few jackstands, and a little help.

is there somehting special about a4s? cuz m6s are a cake to replace fluids in

V
10-27-2006, 11:23 AM
autos have a convertor which is full of fluid and you need a machince to flush it out, or remove it and drain it.

ohh never mind. in m6 you just unscrew a little plug and its a win!

fluid looks bad, so flush would be good, wouldn't it?
i think everything else i'd be up for doing, except i'm clueless

Tru2Chevy
10-27-2006, 11:33 AM
Not always. Sometimes changing fluid that already looks that bad will kill a transmission faster. That's why it's important to change tranny fluid regularly before it looks that way.

big difference if you either buy the parts or do all the work yourself. My Pilot needed a complete brake overhaul - pads and rotors. The price was $800.00 for for the job.

I bought the rotors and pads at my cost and with labor it was 350.00 for everything. He would not warranty it though. Big whoop BTW he was POed I bought the parts.

Tsar
10-27-2006, 11:39 AM
800 for pads and rotors? x 10

rear rotors for the Pilot were 200 each retail, I got them for 130 each. I said the same thing when they gave me the price.

yea trans fluids can be picky, I changed mine probably under a year ago and now look what happened

They were probably going to charge you list price for all of the parts. Thats how they make most of their money! SO thats why he was so pissed lol.

i have more or less found all the parts i need and then some
all together the cost of parts they said were in need of replacement i found for under 300 total

i have one more question though
i found the intake manifold gaskets (http://napaonline.com/masterpages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=NGA&PartNumber=MS15307&Description=Manifold+Gasket+Set+(Intake)) on NAPA
and it says i need a valve cover set...

would that be this (http://napaonline.com/masterpages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=SGA&PartNumber=VS19&Description=Valve+Cover+Gasket+Set) or this (http://napaonline.com/masterpages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=NGA&PartNumber=VS50019&Description=Valve+Cover+Gasket+Set)

or am i completely missing it?

exhaust has been started...Wow, you're car is messed up. ALl that & exhaust for $1800? I'm not so sure that is so bad. :)

So, you are buying parts. Are you doing this your self?

Knipps
11-01-2006, 08:27 PM
they weren't going to do all that, that's just what they said needed replacement
the 2k estimate was for exhaust/brakes only

yeah i'm going to do it, Kasey offered up some help and i have a friend in town who's done some work that's going to give me a hand
