extra gas in cyls waskes down the rings and the engine goes boom. after the really cool boom, the engine doesn't rev good anymore.
the solution, tell him it sounds the coolest if he just floors it and holds it there for about a minute. some time around the 30 second mark the neighbors, mr valve and mrs piston, will become romantically involved and run away from the rest of the motor through the side of the block taking the nosey old mr connecting rod with them.
then you won't ever have to hear him mindlessly reving the engine again.

I say after about 40 seconds just drop it down into gear while keeping the foot to the floor...

Negative. I doubt he's ever dropped his car on a jack and/or saute'd green beans over an engine still attached to the chassis of his car

maroman88 hey i have a 305 tpi with a posi slip rear and a set of 3:73 in it..

V
11-08-2006, 07:03 PM
posi slip?

Kid Racer
11-08-2006, 07:40 PM
posi slip... its not stright posi...so say u were doing a donut the inside tire would spend slower or faster then the out side tire...but in a stright line they both spend the same....it was desigend too keep from braking the rear...stright posi spends at the same speed and all.....so there for when u do trick and stuff ur iner tire is spening the same as the out side witch isnt good..

V
11-08-2006, 07:41 PM
posi-traction aka limited slip
spooled rears keep them the same all the time

Kid Racer
11-08-2006, 07:44 PM
no it doesnt...stright posi does that...posi slip keeps them spening at two different rates

Dam, we're really going to need some sort of grammar requirements pretty soon. You guys can't be that lazy to type like this and if you really can't spell or speak properly you should be doing homework, not playing on the web. :-?

NJSPEEDER

posi = limited slip, it is a simple tension system. when you make a turn the limited slip will allow one tire to turn faster to make the outside of the arc while leaving the inside tire turning slower. when going in a straight line, since the pressure on both tires is equal, it will try to turn both at the same rate.
for both to be locked up at all times is a spool as smokinss stated

Kid Racer

ummm okay

Mike
11-08-2006, 07:58 PM
ummm okay

they are right you know

1. open diff.....one wheel spins

2. posi.......rate of spin changes on inside wheel to assist traction and turning in street vehicles.

3. spool.....both spin at the same rate all the time, great for drag racing, not as good for street use for the same reasons that posi is good

Actually, limited slip is more street friendly then a posi. I haven't inspected the posi in my 70 SS396, but there is no limited slip to it and it hops when making some turns and pulling in and out of parking spots. My posi might be "modified" so that it's jammed together to act like a spool, but I won't know until I check it out.

Eaton posi?

The clutch pack springs might be too strong. I think the green ones are strongest, followed by yellow and one other...

corrosion can also cause it to be too tight. jeff, did th ecar sit fo ra while before you bought it?

Yeah, the previous owner didn't put many miles on it at all. I'll open it up this winter to see what's going on. I can't complain though, it keeps the car pretty dam straight even as your spinning the tires going through the gears.

only problem with corrosion is you have to be careful with solvents. a lot of stuff will either bake to the friction material and glaze it or cause the material to dry out and wear faster.
WD-40 is pretty gentle and should provide a solution.

Definetly worth a shot, but if that's the case it's time for a posi rebuild. :D

No.

Limited slip is the generic term. Different companies have/had different names for their limited slip units:

Chevy- Posi-Traction
Ford - Traction-Lok
Pontiac - Safe-T-Trak
Mopar- Sure-Grip

Etc...

They are ALL limited slip differentials. The rear wheels can spin at different rates to allow smooth cornering.

"POSI" is a slang term for limited slip, like Jell-o is for gelatin or Coke is for cola.

A SPOOL is NOT a differential in that it does not allow the wheels to spin at different speeds. Both tires spin at the same speed, period. You will drag the outside tire in a turn.
