ok, i got a new laptop and i'm trying to set up a home network. I just want a basic wired network, no wireless crap. i have an ethernet fast switch, but i cant figure it out, i had the same issues when trying to network my old PC too, so if anyone wanna come by to set it up for me, i'll buy you dinner....

you'll need either a wired router or wireless router for starters or just click the little network icon to see if you can steal your neighbors internet

you could try and sell the one you have and get a wired/wireless router so then you'l have both options :D i wouldnt recommend linksys for wireless though ive always had problems with the signal dropping out on my wrt54g, you could try one from belkin.

as for having a wired ethernet connection all you have to do is plug your cable into one of the (incomming) ports and the one comming from your cable modem into the WAN port on the router (thats the outgoing port). you might also have to clone your computers MAC address to the router (if it is indeed a router and not a switch/hub) its pretty simple to do. all you have to do is go into the webconfig of it (try typing http://192.168.1.1 into your address bar in your browser) and look for something that says "clone MAC address" click it and you should be set. all that does is make your router look like your PC from the view of your ISP.

i just re read your post and u said its a switch, its a possibility that it might have a webconfig page but i doubt it since there usually isnt much to configure. i just remembered this too windows it notorious for being a bastard with networking, especially sharing stuff on a LAN (sharing stuff between computers on a home network)

ok i bought a wireless, i got the cable modem working through it for my desktop, and if i use the ethernet cable i can use the internet through the laptop but i still cant get the wireless part to work. im fed up and refuse to mess with it anymore i spent all day /night on it till my friend got me drunk. ill wait a while and maybe go back to it or see who i know that can set it up correctly, but as of right now, im fed up with computers and cars, so who knows how much ill be online.

i remember reading something like this, although i believe it was cable, that they want people to buy more than one setup. is your connection set up through an ethernet cord? if so, this could be relatively easy

well i got my wireless to work. I have optimum online. In the past the moden only worked with the USB to my comp, not the ethernet. but after setting it up again for like the 5th time, it now works with the ethernet card. first the cable line goes to the cable moden then to a netgrear wireless router(w/ 4 ports) One ethernet cable runs to my desktop. i had another ethernet cable plugged into my laptop(before wirelss worked) and now with the wireless router working, i have 3 empty ports on the router. I will be running a cable to my basement where i'll set up my old desktop and hook that up to the router as well. that way ill have internet on all 3 comps, with just one cable modem.

and btw... i was an idiot for why my wireless wasn't working lol... last night while showing my friend my new laptop, i saw a switch on the front of the case... and on-off for the wireless haha and of course it was off. Once turned on and i went through all the setting again, it works perfectly...

i have that issue with my wireless set-up
usually if i quit the router install after that it works fine.
make sure you turn the dsl on BEFORE the wireless

it may also help if you turn your firewall off during installation

damn i sound like a :geek:

Ahh...I think that is the DSL modem that has a built in 1 port router. I don't remember the exact specifics, but you have to set that modem not to act as a router, so that you can correctly use the other router that you have.

Garrett and I did this at foff667's house a few months ago.

Try a Google search to see if you can find the instructions for it.
