Hey guys, I got a 1996 Camaro wiht a 3.8, and have been looking for a bypass pulley so I can take out the compressor. It worked for me for a bout three days when i bought it, which was about 3 years ago lol. Now I've been comparing part numbers for the V8's Compressor and the 3.8 and the 3.4, and found out they're all the same compressor ( HD6). But when I go to look for a bypass, theres one for the 3.4 and the 5.7, but what about us 3.8'ers being thrown on the back burner. has anybody tried thios method on their V6 3.8 to see if its compatible, or does anybody know any knowledge if the compressors, tho the same system and part number, are different? thanx.

I looked it up online at rockauto.com. It appears the Delco part number for the V8 is not the same as the V6.

3.8 V6: 1520454
5.7 V8: 1520178 or 1520776

They list a bypass for the V8 (Dorman #34209). No V6 listing.

You could fix the AC, no?

No listing for the 'bird either. There is one listed for a 96 Buick Regal 3.8l. Dorman #34195. But my guess is it won't work. But you could try it. Return it if it doen't fit.

Could you order a 3.8l Camaro w/o air? Maybe the dealer has a listing for a GM part?

Well I just went to intense-racing.com, and they have them for the 3.8's butthey say the f-bodies need a shim. dont know why since our blocks are practically the same unless the s/c is out just a hair further. and I would fix it, but i got the best a/c around, t tops lol. to me its just dead weight.

Just get a shorter belt, that's what i've been running for a year... 60.5" I believe, and ditch the entire compressor

Yes, no need for an idle pulley, just a shorter belt. Kasey (savage) can tell you the correct belt routing to use when you remove the compressor.
