Depends on your budget, and how well-matched you want your combination to be.

If you aren't on a tight budget, AFR's are where it's at IMO.

Edelbrock E-Tec 200 heads could be fun :)

there is no one answer for what heads to use. you will need to supply a bit more information.
how do you plan to use the car?
pump gas or race gas?
how high do you want to rev it?
what kind of exhaust do you plan to run?

a lot goes into putting an engine combination together, and the only way to do it right is to view it as a whole engine, not simply as individual parts.

on pump gass ima looking 11 to 1 and ima use slp loudmoth shotgun mufflers and ima useing a 3200 stall converter and a cam that is from 3000 o forget what its too...

11 to 1 on pump gas means aluminum heads with careful cam selection. If you screw it up it's detonation city.

I would suggest going 10.25-10.5:1.

If you want to run the ragged edge on pump premium you can't just slap parts together and expect them to work (not saying that's what you are doing). You need to be concerned with Dynamic compression ratio as well as Static, and do a lot of your own research. 10.25:1 is probably just fine for you.

What are your goals for this car? Do you just want a fast street cruiser or are you planning on drag racing it?

Have you thought about what setup you are going to use on the rest of the drivetrain?

Also a cam in the 3000+ power band is going to leave something to desire for a strret car, what exactly is this car going to be for?

ima use it for drag and street...ima going to build my 700 r4 ima puting better band and gears and clutch and shift plates and valve body and sevos on it...ima going with a b&m shifter and i am keeping the 373 in my rear....i have been doing some research and i found a set of dart heads and intake that come together out of a mag....ill write down what the scription says about it.

Pro 1 Aluminum
sb chevy, 230/64 angle plug,
1.550 springs, 195# @ 1.9",
690 max lift,2.08"/1.60 valves.....

AND my cam

sb-chevy - solid
adv. gross rpm
duration lift range
280/288 .518/.536" .3200-6000

What cam did you pick out?

Sounds like it's not going to be all that street friendly....

Ahh....It's a solid flat-tappet cam. You're looking at this one, right:

Adv. Duration: 280°/288°
Lift: .518''/.536''
RPM Range: 3200-6800

Solid lifter cam for a street car isn't the best idea. They require some extra maintenece....

Might want to think about hydraulic flat tappet cams.....something like this would prolly suit your application pretty well:

Xtreme Energy XE284H Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft Only
Lift: .507''/.510''
Duration: 284°/296°
RPM Range: 2300-6500

For what it's worth-

Here is a 383 I sold two years ago. You can see what parts went into it, and what the hp output was in the dyno sheet. It ran without a hitch on pump premium.

To be on the safe side with a carb motor --pump gas = low compression or it will not last very long -- 9.5 every day car / 10 or 10.5 u need 100 octane BLEND at times temp related -- 11 on is all race gas -- 13 is a pro shop with lots of money to get that -- just because the comic book said its 13 don't believe it -- very difficult to obtain and costly --- camshaft occupation is the key to high numbers -- the more duration your camshaft has the lower the compression will end up being -- and the less duration the higher the static will be -- flat 2 groove piston 383 with a 64 cc cylinder head will net with a 250 260 duration cam around 10.2 to 1 -- lift plays no part in the numbers -- but a longer connecting rod will help the flame burn completeness as the piston has a longer dwell time at TDC -- hope that helps -- the picture is a 406 SBC 64 cc head stock short rod and pump gas with too much timing and a heavy foot -- jz

that is my favorite cam we sold 100s of them the first race car i build for one of my sons was a 406 flat piston 518 / 536 crane iron head dart 215cc 850 DP 2 speed 456 12 bolt 10:5 15 tire 3000 lb 70 nova car went 10:50s to 10:70s cold air too hot 700 rounds before block cracked bumpy as hell snappy throttle response -- still have the cam could not throw it away -- jz
