- JustinOh. Ok. I thought they could only have blue lights, not permanently mounted. And need a permit.

theres a shady line there lol. you just gotta hide the switch or pull the fuse when you go to inspection. i checked out galls real quick, ive ordered from there before but i didnt see any strobe kits, just replacement bulbs, but ill have to look again.

FYI....just found my blue light permit, all it says is permission is granted for the installation and use of a flashing blue emergency light under section 39:3-50 R.S.

This is from the permit application on the mvc website:

MOUNTING OF LIGHTS; CANDLEPOWER:

No more than two blue lights may be installed on a vehicle. If one light is used, it shall be mounted on the center of the roof; the left windshield column; or the front of the vehicle so that the top of the light is no higher than the top of the vehicle’s headlights. If two blue lights are used, they shall be mounted on either side of the roof at the front of the vehicle directly behind the top of the windshield or on each windshield column.

The blue lights shall be temporarily attached, removable lights of the flashing or revolving type, and shall not exceed seven and one-half inches in diameter. The lights shall have a blue lens and shall be equipped with a lamp of not more than 51 candlepower as measured without a lens. The lights shall be controlled by a switch installed inside the vehicle.

ALTERNATING FLASHING OR STROBE HEADLIGHTS ARE PROHIBITED AND SHALL NOT BE INCORPORATED INTO THE HOUSING OF ANY LIGHTING.

Not permanent (like that says), that is what I was told. Most of us overlooked it since these guys were volunteers. But the state called us on it once.

I hear that the blue light laws are getting stricter next year and cops are being told to abide with them. From what I hear you can only have a dash light that is under a certain wattage and it can only be placed on the upper passenger side of your windshiel.

I dont know anyone who listens to that, and I still need a permit. You just fill out the form and send it to the DMV right..?

Whelen is the major company that makes light bars/strobes.

All the cops around here primarily use whelen and come to think of it we got one of the high end whelen led light bars on our flatbed

They definitly make a good product.

alright, finally got something! went up to the whelen store in pearl river ny and got a 2 pack of the new LED Hide-A-Ways! they work and act like strobes but are LED's. they are installed like strobes, i drilled 1/2in hole in each parking light and screwed them in and sealed em up nice. ran all the wiring and put a nice little switch where the rear defrost switch would be lol. basicly there are 16 LED's per head, 4 on each side so they can reflect off the insides of the lense. theres like 85 patterns to choose from but i went with the typical 3 flash per side pattern.

ill make a video and post it up !

Why do you want those lights?

They look very cool. I'm just not sure when you can use them.

I did read all of this. Are not strobes illegal? Those are not covered under blue light permits.

It looks cool, I just wouldn't want to see you get a ticket. Good luck.
